I am concerned about the cut throat politics, the need for figuring out my own impact, and the rough WLB that is mentioned in almost every company review on Blind. I am not an all star engineer by any means. I am curious and want to work my 40 hours but I don’t want to dedicate my life to work; even if it means not as much career progression. I just feel unhappy with such stress. All that being said, is Meta the place for me? How do you like the New York office? Yoe 2 Tc 90 (not amazon. Am swe)

Man, it's hilarious to me that E4 at Meta is the same TC as mine at Sr Staff
just hop
Nah, I like my job, and I don't really need more money
It’s unclear if you even have an offer from them, so assuming you dont, my advice would be to get it first and then worry about all this. Assuming you do have an offer, I call that you have little to lose. You can definitely find a 90-140k job again, easily if things go south at Meta. On the upside, you could land in a decent team there or find some pocket of shelter from the typical negatives if you stick to your personal priorities and manage expectations. Worst case, they let you go with a nice severance and you have a great Meta name on your resume, making your future employability much more desirable. You’re early career and I dont see how it’s a big issue to try and potential fail at Meta now compared to the future
Yea the thing is usually companies only give you a few days to think about it. That’s why I’m trying to strategize now, preparing for the best. If it doesn’t work out, that’s fine too. I see what you’re saying and generally agree. They’re only hiring in NYC which would require a move, which is also another consideration. I live in east coast but would be a big cultural shock to move to such a large city. Thank you for your comment.
Get the offer first, worry about this later. There’s no harm in trying your chance at an interview. If you fail, it saves you from all this pointless strategizing/concerning. If you succeed, they will still give you a few weeks to think it over if you ask for it and you can worry about whatever you want at that time
Just a reminder, you don’t need to work more than 40 hours a week. It’s about time management & setting boundaries.
Don’t need to worry about this at e3/e4. Even at high levels it is avoidable if you pick the right team/org. I’m an IC7 in the ads org who puts in 40 hour weeks and is stress free.
Don't confuse blind with reality or anything close lol.
You think things are better irl? I assume it depends on org which makes sense. I just don’t know what org to pick or if I’d be able to call the shots
You call the shots, wlb is great, work is fun. People make mistakes any over work when new for some reason but just don't do that and enjoy.
lol don’t come here if you want to work 40 hours as e3/4. You have promo clock and will need to work hard. 40 hours can only happen after 1-2 years of tenure as E5. Reality is always closer to 45.
I would ask if you can work from home the first 3 months to see if you make it past probation. Meta is notoriously cutthroat and I’ve been there. Imagine the worse case scenario of moving to nyc and then getting laid off because of some a hole boss nervous that you’re smarter than them. Then once you pass probation, you can move. This place is a very flat work culture so you’re doing every single thing on your own. People are pressured to not say no to meetings. They’re running home and logging back on to work until 1.”,2.”,3 am.
I would recommend staying away, I kind of regret starting my career here. Even juniors have to deal with politics and finding scope. But if you have nothing to lose, I guess money is still good.
How did u get interview?
