Meta Onsite (E5) - Need review!
Did my Meta on-site this week. Phone interview - 2 problems from meta-tagged questions. Did well and solved both problems. The recruiter said I was recommended as strong. Virtual loop Onsite: Coding 1 - 2 medium coding questions (1 Meta tagged out of it). Solved both the problems with 5 minutes to spare and did a dry run too. Coding 2 - 2 medium coding questions (1 Meta tagged out of it and another one was a variation of Meta tagged). Solved both optimally, did dry runs, and the interviewer was satisfied. System design - Very Average - Not very confident. Spent more time on specific parts (deep-diving). Haven't properly explained API design, data model and back of envelop calculations. Behavioral - Did decent. Questions were typical. Need feedback from the community on how I did! Thank you! YOE - 6 TC: 225k
Your YOE?
A bit hard to say, because sys design and behavioral are the key ones for E5 vs E4. You say you did decent on both, that could mean you did well enough or you were a bit sub par, enough to make interviewers lean towards E4. But I think you'll get E5. Your sys design sounds like it could be a pass imo. Deep diving can be good. Not explaining back of envelope calcs is probably not important imo. API design and data model are important, but again, maybe yours were fine and the interviewer didn't think they needed more explanation. For behavioral, at E5 it's no longer enough to "just don't be a dick" they're going to want to see that you have been in a leadership position on projects/teams before and can handle that reasonably. But if your answers showed that, then even "decent" answers were probably enough.
What eng role are you interviewing for? If you're trying for infra, things like back of envelope calcs might be more important. But for FE or product eng roles I don't think they'll be a big deal.
Infra role. But I said initially that I would come back to BOE calculations in the last. Thought 45 minutes was short of time for SD and hurried to do other parts and de-prioritized BOE calculations.
