Meta engg. employees: do you use Windows or Linux laptops provided by the company? Asking because the onboarding flow has only a MacBook to choose from. I'm more comfortable with Windows (shortcuts, window management), and with WSL I don't think Unix compatibility will be an issue. I'm okay with Linux as well. Any specific reason to stick with Macs (please comment below)? #facebook #meta #onboarding #misc
Internal tooling will be built based on the package versions and Unix tools included in macOS. Unless your company releases tools for all three platforms it’s not as simple as “oh it’s Unix so it’ll work on Linux”. Also if you use windows at a company that uses macs I’m gonna assume you suck at coding because you rather handicap yourself instead of learning new tech. Learn how to learn. Don’t be the guy on the team who brings up in standup every day how they are blocked due to some incompatibility because of a personal decision.
Tell us more about yourself lord Zeiss.
@Amazon: > Internal tooling will be built based on the package versions and Unix tools included in macOS What Unix tools does Mac have that cannot run on WSL or Linux? Genuinely curious. If you mean that there are dependencies on specific versions of tools shipped with MacOS, then that seems like a bad practice. > Also if you use windows at a company that uses macs I’m gonna assume you suck at coding because you rather handicap yourself instead of learning new tech I don't know if Meta is a Mac-only shop. Hence the post. Also, wouldn't I be handicapping myself if I chose an OS that I'm not familiar with, especially if there is no convincing reason to go with that OS? > Learn how to learn. Don’t be the guy on the team who brings up in standup every day how they are blocked due to some incompatibility because of a personal decision. I am open to learning. I am not a luddite. I would however, like to know if there is a solid reason behind choosing a particular tech before jumping on the bandwagon. I don't want to spend time learning the ins and outs of Mac ecosystem if I could be just as productive on other OSes.
I had a windows pc on which I did some coding. As a side project it sucked to code on windows. Now I have Debian on my new personal pc and it's pretty cool to code, play around. But other than coding i get some issue or the other almost everyday, even zoom is so messed up for linux. To be productive at work with all these deadlines and not waste time on compatibility, just go with mac. Takes a week at max to get a hang and that search engine called google is a good friend.
Fb is a Mac only shop for all intents and purposes. Maybe if you really tried you could find a team that develops mostly in windows in FRL or something but I'm not sure that's even a thing. Fwiw, it's not like you have to "learn the mac ecosystem." you're going to spend 90% of your time in vscode and chrome like the rest of us.
Thank you for a helpful response.
@fb is there a way to get Windows system though? in the same boat as op.
As a former windows user and Ubuntu user last 4 years I have to say that I find the Ubuntu->Mac(unix) transition very smooth.(had to use mac for an internship and I could do anythong for development as ubuntu). Windows I do not want to even open them...
@op Were you able to find a way to get Windows, ideally Thinkpad? In the same boat. Need windows and it only gives Mac option.
I've decided to heed the wisdom of the elders and stick with a Mac for now.
If you're a real engineer, not a technologically illiterate one, use a real computer (PC or Linux) not that closed source kids toy named after a hamburger Edit: If you're scared to develop on Linux or Windows you're a fake dev 🤦 end of story. Literally 90% of tech companies issue PC's over Mac's, but ok Amazon how is, "only gaming companies use PC" when windows use is at 75% across the board? 🤔 Also, how much is Apple paying you to lick their boots? 😊 PS: 62% of all software is developed on Windows. wInDoWs iS aWfUl fOr dEvElOpMenT oh ok, cool story bro.
You are stupid. Windows is awful for developing. There is a reason the only company developing with windows are Microsoft and video game companies.
Windows is open source?
