I see no issue with companies collecting my data for business purposes. Without corporate data collection I would be shown irrelevant ads (not less ads!), would have never been recommended some amazing songs (discovered No Rest for the Wicked recently) and movies, and would also not be able to enjoy some amazing innovations such as Alexa that heavily depend on data collection to train the AI. I feel everyone is always up in arms about this privacy thing but I have yet to see exactly why I should care that a company collects my data for business purposes and why this is so bad for me. Ultimately if you care about privacy so much you have options like Duck Duck Go. Why make people like me who enjoy Facebook and Google search to feel guilty about using products we like? Nobody is making you use them. Finally I think that a world that caters too much to privacy headlines is one that will stifle the economy and technological innovation. Companies like Meta and Snap pay so well and they can’t continue to push technology forward if we suffocate them. Lastly I want to talk about the government privacy issue. Do I want privacy from the government? Yes I do as they aren’t collecting my data for business purposes, but for surveillance purposes. That’s different from corporate data collection. Meta can’t put me in jail but the government can.
Business data becomes gov data very easily. Perhaps people don't want the data collected at all
Then bar the government from access to that data without subpoena. I believe that’s the law currently. Why stifle innovation for no reason? As I said you are free to use Duck Duck Go and privacy alternatives if you care so much. Don’t force it on me.
Regulation is usually around giving people the choice, in this area.
They have the right to collect anyones data if they have permission to do so. Apple implemented the feature to allow users to block apps from following them in order to provide more transparency and allow people easier control over their personal data. If Facebook’s stock price tanks because their userbase is better informed and has more control over their privacy then maybe the real issue was with their business model.
I got no problems with allowing users to block apps from being able to collect data on them. That’s a choice they are free to make just like not using the app at all is.
Oh and how come Apple still have access to that data? Double standards!
But it's not only for "business purposes" now is it? I think the problem people have is how it is being used and how it can be and was exploited (Cambridge Analytica or the Massacre in Mynammar)
The problem is selling manipulation of its users to literally anyone
And that’s where regulations need to step in.. what happened with Cambridge analytica is unfortunate and disappointing too… but the company has made tons of progress since then on it.. but media headlines will continue to not showcase them because at the end of the day they all want it to die..
Meta can you tell me about changes made to prevent another CA? Super interested in hearing about this
These apps are incentivized to make you an addict. They are using your likes and dislikes against you and me.
But no one is forcing you to use those apps.
The government can't legally track this data (they still do because the legislative arm of government isn't interested in letting the judicial do anything about it), but they can legally buy it from data brokers: https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20210322/18294246470/data-broker-looking-to-sell-real-time-vehicle-location-data-to-government-agencies-including-military.shtml And fuck you. You might not see why it's a big deal but that doesn't mean the rest do. With 80% off websites using Facebook or Google trackers it doesn't matter if you "use Facebook" or not. You're still being tracked without your consent. And that data already had a hidden impact on your life from online pricing, to job security checks, to loans. You just don't get to see how it all links up behind the scenes because you're not privy to it. So fuck off with you "it doesn't affect me so it's not a problem" bullshit you small minded pissant.
I don’t care if I’m tracked. I happily use Google and Facebook fully aware that I’m tracked. I don’t see why this is bad for me.
Wait, are we allowed to tell each other to fuck ourselves on Blind? This is a game changer!
I love being tracked too by these apps. Makes me feel special, watched over and safe in a strange way. It's amazing that I can just open up Google Maps and recollect my travels over the years. Or that I can see when I searched for some term that I use today without thinking about it for the first time. I think it's beneficial to me - and I don't buy the argument that "nothing comes for free", there's always non-zero sum win-win scenarios in the world and data collection is one of them.
Nice try Zuck.
I like relevant ads .. no problem with that But ultimately they're after engagement and they will direct me more towards the things that engage me because it results in more clicks rather than the content I actually like .. that's a bit problematic
Who said you could stop filming?
