Meta work culture

Have an offer from Meta as a software engineer. I’ve heard that Meta for E6 is very intense and they have 15% pip per year. Is this true? Has anyone actually been fired there My priority is wlb, I work <30 hours a week at oracle and have amazing benefits and low stress. We don’t have pip at oracle as well and people are generally nice. I would like to grow in my career but am afraid that I will get fired within a year at meta and then not find a job in this market. Is it really that intense? Current TC: 320k Meta: 600k Net worth: 3 mil

Meta at E6 is going to be very stressful and your WLB will not be good. Source: ex-Meta. Do what you wish with this information.

Thanks all, I’m declining the offer. The type of work I will be doing is unclear, and I want stability and peace of mind at this point in my life. I would be ok to work 60+ hours if it were my own company or startup

At E6 at Meta they would expect you to define that work and give the rest of the team direction, this could be the reason why the work is unclear.

Impressive! What's your yoe?

15

Meta Santosh69 Jan 20

Don't expect wlb at facebook.

At E6 good luck with WLB

15% MM are for cross levels. If you join at E6 or even E5 from outside, probably work hard and proactively. If you can meet expectations for one year, probably you can survive much longer. Internal E6 is a little easier since they are familiar with cultures/tools/codes. If you are a domain expert and join a similar team, I think your ramp up will be much easier. I still work at least 50 hours even after I stay here multiple years

Are there teams at Meta which are more chill?

Spotify manjaro Jan 20

one of my relatives at Meta has a second job. She only works 10-15 hrs a week at meta.

Amazon jPBv77 Jan 20

With 3 million backing you up, I don't see a reason why you should be afraid? Go try it. If you don't like it, boomerang back to Oracle later.

Oracle djebdie OP Jan 20

I cannot boomerang. Oracle has a wierd policy that you can only boomerang once, which I already did.

Amazon jPBv77 Jan 20

Then go to any other medium tier company which pays shit but has good wlb

Breakdown of $600k? With refreshers you would probably be making $780k+ in your 4th year. On a good team you could get away with 40 hours. On a bad team you might need to put in 50-60, and that's after getting ramped up. There is unfortunately very difficult to tell a good team from a bad team before joining. How is your relationship with your current manager and what is Oracles boomerang policy? That could be risk mitigation for you. Did they make you team match before offer?

Google Akira88 Jan 20

Bottom line: are you OK with working twice as hard for twice as much money? If yes, accept the offer. If no, decline.

Meta LuvItLuvIt Jan 20

Are you a generalist or hired for a specific role ? E6 expectations are high especially now and don’t expect to coast if you are here ; despite what you read on blind talent to bozo ratio is high , you need to be really technically strong to survive long term.

WLB , Meta, pick one.
