College sophomore at the moment. I’ve only interned at Google so far and don’t have much perspective on the rest of the valley. What skills should I be developing past general SWE stuff to maximize my TC at graduation? Are there any companies that would be better than Google for my first few years in industry? Anything else that you can think of would also be appreciated. Thanks
Don't focus on TC now. Get a full time offer at Google / Microsoft Research etc and spend the next two years becoming really good at something you love - needn't even be a 'cool' area. Projects with your Prof, industry projects, papers, part time researcher at your local company, etc. TC goes into a different order of magnitude if you're global top few in some technology area - you want to aim for that, not aim to make 50k higher per year
This^ the best investment is investing in yourself. Also, never forget to negotiate. You never get the best deal on first ask.
Strange. Usually the commpn advice is to aquire very broad set of skills and be a "generalist". That has been my career so far but ive always wanted to narrow my focus, just dont know what area to choose. What would you recommend? (AI/ML out of the question because i cant do stats)
