Coming from Microsoft to Google a few of years back due to the absurd nepotism in my team there, I can’t but notice HR trends across these companies and - based on stories from friends - the entire tech industry. 1) Reduction of benefits. First at quality level and then at quantity level. From vacation time (unlimited is a scam) to food service. From workload to promo budgets. And layoffs constantly to avoid any rebellion. 2) The inequality of compensation getting worse. You think you are getting a good deal because the stock valuation got your TC from 400K to 800K. Think again. That middle manager that was supposed to get 800K got 1.6M. The VP stock grant is far bigger, and some are getting 4M. These guys won’t see any problems or take any risky action with such a huge increase in their TC. 3) The rise of bad management. Unless you get some sexual harassment against your manager, the power has shifted so much it is not even funny. A colleague M2 threw a 10+ YoE L4 at Google in the M bucket because that person talks with a challenging tone. No bad impact or quality: all made up stuff by attribution of responsibility a posteriori to explain the rating. Only in person there is the admission that the great employee was picked for the bad rating for no reason other than personal interpretation of body language and voice tone. TC: 800K Is the Tech environment getting worse near you?
It is, but you all are masochists that love it and think that you’re above of unions or any other type of employee protection. So…
Enlighten us on how unions solved anything past minimum salary, which is not a problem in tech.
OP, you were making $400K at Microsoft? Now $800K at Google? I'm guessing you were L67 at Microsoft and now staff engineer at Google?
TC wasn't 400K only at Microsoft. It was indeed quite good and at times surpassing my current compensation due to stock valuation. The problem is that after the initial grant was gone the cliff at Microsoft is abysmal. Even a promo to Partner wouldn't get me back there. I negotiated at my final year at Microsoft, just before the cliff. Life at Google is far easier and TC stable, if you survive the layoff roulette.
