I found this article while searching through the interwebs for clues as to who/what teams are being affected. I hadn’t heard this about Azure yet so I thought I would share. The more info the better? From the article: “The Information reports that the Azure cuts will be concentrated in business development sales support within a team led by Omar Abbosh, corporate vice president, Industry Solutions at Microsoft. “ https://www.datacenterknowledge.com/microsoft/breaking-news-microsoft-include-some-azure-staff-layoffs #microsoft #layoff
Even if it happens in that org it wouldn’t add up to 10K. It’s a massive layoff which IMO (and I could be wrong given Azure was not impacted today) will touch many orgs inside Azure. Some teams will be affected due to change of priorities in projects and some performance. Note that Microsoft hired ~60K from end of 2020 to mid of 2022. It’s a lot ! Now, someone has to pay for it. Cloud revenue runs by usage and with poor economic conditions customers have been cutting on this. Demand for compute is lowering during this time. Same we see in other areas (this is expected with pay as you go model). In these conditions there is no way investors will continue to be happy. And when investors are not happy, LT is questioned and pressured. Layoffs were inevitable. I think even after 10K it’s not over. By Nov they will quietly do some more (same with any Cloud company). Economy is going to trough. After that it will climb (2024 mid may be) and then we can take a deep breath. But again after 8-10 years it will repeat….so technically it’s never over !
No, I’m definitely not saying all 10k are coming from here. I had yet to hear of any layoffs coming from Azure until i saw this article, so I shared.
Haven’t heard anything in Azure yet 🤷🏻♂️
Makes sense if the sales pipeline is running dry. Next round will have to cut deeper.
Of course some of the Azure team will be let go. Mass layoffs are an opportunity to clean house. Microsoft way over hired so if the economy doesn't recover fairly quickly there will be another round of at least 5,000-10,000.
Should I leave Microsoft Azure and join another company? Just got an offer but it is not higher. It is in the healthcare industry. Making my choice.
This is literally the article I shared?
News has been strangely silent on Azure impacts. Any Microsoft Azure employess who can confirm deny for their team?
