Microsoft Research vs Microsoft AI & Research

Heard that MSR is quite a prestigious place. How about MS AI&R?

It's the same org now

Microsoft Bad Hombre Jun 15, 2017

Not particularly prestigious though, same prestige as pretty much every other group in Microsoft.

They should be equivalent. MSR is obv way more elite than MS (even with same titles levels can be higher). In terms of prestige, i think this is the ranking deepmind > fair > brain > msr

Microsoft Bad Hombre Jun 15, 2017

Not true. MSR has a more established reputation and works on much broader areas than these other labs that popped up the day before yesterday and will be gone the day after tomorrow!

Well IBM research have 6 nobel prize winners and 6 turing award winners, which is way more than what msr has and is much more broader than it. Moreover msr is already gone from bay area and its wings clipped elsewhere as well.

MSR (Ai+r) labs is world renowned for research. Are you a researcher or dev? MSR (Ai+r) is changing and slowly learning to create products and ship thus experienced devs and PMs who are flexible in a startup like environment are valued. It's a great place with a unique culture and smart people.

Who cares as long as the money is more that what you're making now?

Microsoft bliiind Jun 16, 2017

MSR is very prestigious. Getting a researcher job is as hard as getting faculty position at a top CS school. AI&R is just a marketing term, it includes bing, Cortana, and MSR.

+1

I talked to a MSFT recruiter about AI+R vs MSR. Totally different. AI+R sounded like "applied machine learning, all over the place in MSFT" instead of research. The recruiter tried to sell me on AI+R but ended up making it sound really lame (to me).
