Any other companies doing this? Seems like an extreme step from a company like Microsoft specially when Amazon and Google are not doing this.
Microsoft is boomer tech, and this is a classic boomer tech move
Some of these statements are to appease Wall Street. Showing you are reducing cost expenditure and laying people off is generally good for stock price.
probably a good move. most of these conferences have no impact on real business. even product launch conferences are completely unnecessary as we have seen thru covid apple product releases: you can do them virtually and build a strong digital guide + support system and it largely works!
Agree 100%. Good for networking, but 0 business value. Even more these days that all talks are posted on youtube
An easy way to cut costs
Also an easy way to loose good experienced people.
Weird that you would assume it’s baggage. “Experienced” doesn’t only mean experience at Microsoft - people have moved to Microsoft after years of experience at other companies. Making someone waste time on booking stuff and then asking to cancel for couple thousand dollars is definitely not something anyone with options would be interested in dealing with. You clearly are not in the position to understand that.

How did this happen? (Meta Stock)
GitHub obviously doing the same as well
Wonder if this is happening at LinkedIn as well.
