Microsoft contract vs Cisco full time

Want some guidance. Never had contract position before and third party recruiter contacted me for possible Microsoft contract position. I was hoping that it was full time but they only had contract positions… If you had an option to choose for your future growth and employability, would you choose Cisco full time or Microsoft contract.. Microsoft contract will be lower TC, but obviously better look on resume. tc 180

Cisco wheremy💰 OP Feb 9, 2023

Ah it’s okay. I have only 2 DMs left and I don’t want to spend it on this. Thank you

Cisco for sure. Why would you work a contract position where you’re paid less.

Better brand on resume that will help me in long term?

As a contractor, you’re not gonna be involved with highly sensitive work or strategic discussions. Contracting won’t have the same pull as full time employment

Contract to full time is an impossible task especially from a third party vendor.

Cisco wheremy💰 OP Feb 9, 2023

So you can only convert from contract to full time if you are hired by the companys recruiter?

MS does actually hire its contractors sometimes. But it is also cost cutting right now. Not sure how stable contractors will be (?)

In this market, go for the full time. Contracting jobs can close and have the role ended without any benefit to you

When you’re employed by a contractor rather than the company where they send you, it doesn’t really help your resume. Cisco is a “better brand” for your resume than XYZ Consulting.

Cisco wheremy💰 OP Feb 9, 2023

But will I not be able to say Microsoft on my resume?

Amazon ㅇㅅㅇ$ Feb 9, 2023

Technically you could put it in for your LinkedIn but you’ll have to caveat that you were a contractor. On the background check you’ll need to put the contracting agency anyways. What’s not to like about Cisco?

If Cisco has layoffs, at least you get severance!

Brand name will not help unless you clear interviews. I think Cisco FT will have better brand name than Microsoft contractor because Microsoft FT will be dealing with high profile work and contractors deal with low hanging fruits because no one wants to give a temporary workers who may not their skin in the game. When you are FT you will grow beyond 9-5 skills naturally than being forced into it. If you are a developer all you need to Leetcode skills even if you write chatgpt single handledly.

It almost never makes sense to turn down a FTE position for a contractor role. In a layoff, contractors are the first to go and with no severance. Cisco is a better brand for your resume than Microsoft contractor for XYZ.

Here’s the rule: Whoever pays you the most valued you the most and that’s where you should go. That’s assuming they’re similar roles.
