More like they don’t want to pay a low performer an extra month or two in addition to severance
I don't think most companies pay a severance for performance based firings. It's not a RIF or layoff.
They meant if you dont leave asap they will take some time to fire someone.. i.e. time spent in building a firing case
I figured that was a given
I disagree with this if you’re able to put the work in. I’ve “checked the box” on several employees, many of them have recovered, a couple even went on to make Club In the following years. Those who weren’t willing to be vulnerable and put in the work absolutely were sent packing. Bottom line, it’s up to the individual and those who want to grow and learn from the experience, even if it is political.
Agreed. Ive been put on PIP and recovered. It starts with having a little humility!
Would the managers level an engineer evenly with “someone out of PIP” vs “someone who performs at a high bar consistently” Just thinking out loud and specifically in terms of $
The headline is smart, his view of PIPs is bullshit. You put someone on a PIP to cover the company's ass when you fire them, it's not an honest attempt to improve their performance.
That said, expect to see a lot of boxes checked in support of workforce reductions.
I agree Vox. Question I have in regards to covering company’s ass is why is it necessary when it’s at-will employment? I always wondered why large corporations go into great lengths to have standardized firing practice to avoid lawsuits or issues when you’re working for at-will employer.
Of course HR recommends that because it's easier for them. Make sure you walk away with a severance package.
It’s not up to you to ‘make sure’. Handing out severance is solely at the company’s discretion
If no severance is offered then obviously you would stay as long as possible and do as little as possible while looking for a next job.
Thought this was common sense
This moron should be on PIP because his sole job is to ensure that people with mismatch can recover. Employment is a two way street. If companies PIP for unnecessary reason they won’t be able to hire talent. Take Amazon as a prime example.
I see what you did there
But...Amazon are still flooded with applications? These companies can treat people like shit because they know they'll take it.
lol ofc they gonna recommend u to leave, makes their job easier
Stay on the PIP and look around for a new job elsewhere. It’s easier to get a job if you already have one, plus you don’t have to explain in detail why you left/want to leave.
Typically, how long someone is allowed stay on PIP?
Depends, 60-90 days for some companies

Williams is correct that getting a fresh start with a new company is better than staying with an employer where a past PIP is always in the shadows.
It's not just the PIPs at the extreme end of the spectrum either. Some companies occasionally stack rank good or great employees to the bottom of the stack due to tenure and politics. For those employees they are set back years in their career and comp and it may be better for them to jump too.
I agree, Amazon. I lived in Redmond for 15 years and know all about the politics of Microsoft's stack ranking.
