Microsoft health insurance and parental leave

I have an offer from Microsoft for Sr PM and going to sign in the next week or so. Can wife and I be covered under their insurance starting the first week of employment or is there a waiting period? Due to health issues we can’t afford having a gap in coverage. Also, i heard there is 12 weeks parental leave available for both parents. Do i need to complete a fixed period of employment (such as 1 yr) before i can take advantage of that? Thanks.

Yeah you are covered the first day never heard of the waiting period. Parental leave is 3month for dad not sure about mom it should be 6months. It would be very mean to not give you parental leave unless you worked a year.

As per Amazon’s policy you have to be employed for a year before you are eligible for paternal leave. So yeah it happens. Hopefully Microsoft is more accommodating.

Bonding leave is the same for mothers and fathers, but birth mothers can also get disability.

Yeah, Microsoft definitely allows for parental leave in your first year. Moreover, you are eligible for the parental leave even if your baby is already born. (I'm not sure, but it should be up to 2 years after your baby was born.)

I thought you have to use the leave before your baby turns 1 ur old

Not sure about retroactive parental leave, but you can use it at least from the first day you work at Microsoft. Source: I have a friend who used it within a few days of starting work.

My wife is on my Amazon insurance plan right now and has rejected coverage from her employer as it isn’t as good. When I join do i need to produce a proof that she is not eligible for insurance from her employer in order to add her to MS insurance plan with no premium?

Microsoft n.a. Feb 18, 2018

You can do coordination of benefits and say you have declined your wife's employer insurance. It would be $75 per pay check to make Microsoft plan the primary.

Microsoft Harmar Feb 19, 2018

If she's not eligible at her employer, there's no cost to having her on yours. If she declines insurance at her employer (even if that coverage has an additional cost), then n.a. is right, there is a fee for using Microsoft as primary. I'm not sure what level of proof is required. You may just have to e-sign a statement that says she isn't eligible. I wouldn't lie. You might get away with it for a while, but the last thing you want is to give Premera an excuse to deny your claim when something catastrophic happens.

When you fill in your benefits you will pay $75 a paycheck. My spouse is on my plan that way. They found out my spouse employer has insurance somehow so I had to pay.

Amazon Excalibur1 OP Feb 19, 2018

Was your spouse enrolled in his/her employer’s insurance plan before your move to MS?

Microsoft Candycane Feb 19, 2018

No they found out where they worked. You need to given them info when you sign up for benefits like SSN for example. Also keep in mind the deductible is $1500 a person, so you will pay $3k out of pocket before MS pays anything for two people. After that there is a $5k out of pocket at 10-20% copay.

A d 75$ a paycheck is still worth taking it
