I recently left Microsoft within a year of my start date. I received a signing bonus that must be paid back in full according to my offer letter. How long will it take for Microsoft to ask me for payment? And I know this is a long shot, but is there any chance my manager steps in and makes it so that I don't have to pay it back? I was there for 8 months and left on great terms. Update: Microsoft sent me an email notifying me that I will need to repay the gross signing bonus in full, within 30 days. The email came exactly 1 month after my last day.
They won't come after you
How do you know? Wishful thinking? Lol
I had a signing bonus across two years. Left shortly after one year after getting the second bonus and nobody ever contacted me to repay the second one.
Hope you negotiated the clawback into your signing bonus for your new company
They would have deducted it from your final check. It should be a pro rated clawback so you don’t owe the full amount.
Got my final check yesterday and it wasn't deducted. My check only covered my very last day though.
I think most companies prorate it, would be surprised if Microsoft doesn’t.
I was told it was not prorated by my MSFT recruiter.
Send them double sign back. Cash rules everything around you now… 💵 👑
It wasn't prorated a few years back, you only needed to return the after tax amount though and you had a very short time to return it before they send it to debt collectors
By default, they will claw back. However, they do ask the manager if they should not claw back due to any reason. If you burned a bridge leaving, or had minimal/no impact in your time there, your ex-manager isn't going to stop the claw back.
OP I left early before a year too and had to pay back a pro rated net amount
Keep in mind if you pay back in different tax year you will owe gross and have to get your taxes back via filing when you do taxes
I left in great terms too but not sure if manager can do anything about it, believe it’s all HR related
What's the worry? This is what you agreed to. If they take it back, that's what you agreed to.
