It is interesting to see Microsoft becoming a major powerhouse in AI. First ChatGPT, and now the CEO of DeepMind. Why are Google and Amazon not able to catch up to Microsoft?

DeepMind is Google so that part of your question is unclear. In general: 1. Google produced most of the best research over the past few years including but not limited to Transformers. Google really fell behind because investing and releasing a top notch LLM would be taking market share from their own cash cow, Google Search. They sat too long on the tech and OpenAI swooped in with ChatGPT. 2. Amazon has historically sucked at being at the forefront of real technical research and innovation. Aws as a whole is just a managed service version of OSS wrapped in IAM and integrated with other AWS Services. Alexa, retail, and kindle are really their in house “innovations” but those are more product than research. 3. Microsoft research has pumped out some pretty good original research over the years, though nothing they really built on in terms of customer facing products. Their big win was getting a large stake in OpenAI, and that has propelled them to the forefront of the GenAI/DL race.
It seems like he’s saying they poached the deep mind ceo
I agree with the comment about Amazon!
