I'm L66 tech lead, I don't have direct reports right now and my team is geographically distributed. I have over 16 years of work experience and solid domain expertise throughout my career from tier1 semiconductor company. My last interview loop at Google ( 2021' oct) was for a manager role, Level 6. I have management experience in systems architecture and R&D. It was a mixed review and recruiter is still in touch with me and tried selling several positions from TPM org but I didn't pursue. Now recruiter is saying she will try again in SWE org once I hit 1 year mark. I'm doing good at Microsoft and my roles and responsibilities are growing as expected except the TC 🙂. Few ex colleagues are joining Google with higher level and titles now ( few L7 in management and systems architecture and one L8) and they are ready to recommend me. What is the right approach in this case? Can I skip my current recruiter and start fresh ? If so, what is the right level to ask for? Yoe: 16+ yrs in embedded systems with strong experience from semiconductor companies TC: embarrassing 🥜 #tech #systems architecture #semiconductor
L3 It will probably still be more TC than your role at Microsoft
Haha, agree with you. HW and semiconductor industry always has low TC. But I can not change my domain now. Have to deal with low TC. But level should be justified, right ?
I agree.
L6 probably
When I discuss with a L8, he said I should try for at least L7 architecture role. Otherwise it is going to be significant low ball. I should've waited for my connections and referrals to join the company first for good endorsement. Is it possible if I wait for some more time and then try ?
Your L8 friend is trolling you
I was in the same position, coming from L66 msft. Google will interview you for L7, then give you a lowball L6 offer at best. You could get L7 at Amazon for more money, scope and experience. Meta won't interview L66 for L7. You could try Cruise, Airbnb, Doordash, Uber, etc for L7 equivalents, but they don't look stable in today's economy. You need someone on the inside to give you a good understanding of what you are getting into.
Got it.
