Current Amazon Microsoft 150 base L61 150 stock 50 sign on over 2 years Comes to 210ish Uber Sde 2 165 base 360 stock over 4 years 70k sign on over 2 years Now I’m concerned about Uber and its hire and fire practices that comes with it, and am leaning towards msft , but I have a lot of people saying Uber is better for progress. Can somebody please guide me? #engineering #software #software #swe #uber #microsoft #offer

What hire and fire practices?
Uber is known to lay off people !
It was 2020 during the pandemic, now it’s hiring like crazy and is not bleeding money. There’s nothing to worry about.
Uber (and Lyft) will never be a profitable company. Even with their own made up accounting rules ("adjusted EBITDA") they barely show a "profit" in some quarters. For now they are still (amazingly) able to attract new investors but I would strongly recommend avoiding these zombie companies.
Who cares I just want $$ and they're giving out plenty
The guaranteed difference in compensation is only $50k over 2 years. No one knows the future of the stock market but I have significantly more confidence in MSFT going up than I do for Uber.
This is coming from someone who really wants to end up at Microsoft eventually. Go for Uber. If you don't like it, you already cleared Microsoft once, so you can probably do it again if you hate it there. The most difficult part of the decision is going to be company stability. Uber has a much higher chance of going under than Microsoft does, but their offer is a shitton higher. If you can survive 2 years without getting cut you'll have 3 years worth of the MS salary and can bank 8 months after taxes to find a new job.
Yeah that was also a factor for sure ! That’s why I wanted to proceed with msft, but there are a number of friends senior than me in the industry who strongly recommended Uber, and hence I wanted to put it to a vote
Are you really gonna ignore the 100k difference there? Also early in your carrier never think about hire/fire practices as is you shouldn’t work at a place more than 2 years - simulates your growth
OP, what did you decide? Also, did they tell you the teams in both Uber and MSFT?

If you can clear Uber then you don’t have to worry about hire and fire IMO. Worse case, you will find another job
Uber does hire-to-fire like Amazon? That's the first time I have heard that about Uber
