Hey Blind, I recently lost my job as a software engineer at Liberty Mutual on Monday from the recent Reductions in Force and could use some advice for my next career moves. My salary was ~105k base + 3-4k bonus per year with the title “software engineer” and I’ve been in the role for 3 years (joined as a junior, received promotion here), working remote up until RTO last month. I currently live in a part of the US that is a low/medium cost of living city, but there aren’t many software jobs nearby so I’m limited to either remote roles or I need to move to a city that has more opportunities available. Given that the market for mid-level engineers is pretty competitive these days and senior-level roles look for 5+ years of experience, I need some advice on how I should approach this job search. From your experience, is it worth moving cities for a job, and which locations would you recommend that have a balance of QoL and total compensation opportunity? I’m open to moving anywhere within the US but would ideally like to avoid the population density of a city like NYC as I have a dog and enjoy the outdoors. Thanks guys for any comments and feedback you might have, I appreciate it ❤️
For NYC you can live in Westchester, on Long Island, or NJ for more space
If you don’t have much keeping you in your current city and moving wouldn’t be a $50k affair I’d definitely apply for in person jobs in cities you find interesting. Don’t worry about deciding on moving until you have an offer.

Do people underestimate E6 role at meta?
Bay Area, NYC, or Boston are the good choices. It’s a lot easier to get remote roles after you already have the big city network and experience. It’s worth it to move, but have the job lined up, or you’re at real risk of running out of funds searching. I would get in touch with a recruiter. They can put opportunities in front of you
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. Do you know where to get in contact with a quality recruiter? I get spammed on LinkedIn frequently by recruiters but they aren’t representing good companies
A good recruiter is going to be working a specific market, meaning city. I can’t help you if you’re moving somewhere other than where my network is. I would think about where you are willing to move to, and then ask for recruiters in that area.
