Minneapolis to Seattle?

Thinking about moving to Seattle for more job opportunities and to get away from cold Minneapolis winters. Is it worth it? Cost of living in Minneapolis is reasonable and I have a nice 3500 sq ft home in a great area with great schools for the kids. However, only high paying work option here is Amazon or remote jobs. Fortune 500 companies here pay poorly. Housing in Seattle would likely be double the cost of Minneapolis, so we will have to downsize. However, there are tons more job opportunities and not as cold in the winter. Not sure about the schools. Anyone moved to Seattle from the Midwest? Is it worth the trouble?

I’m moving soon too!

Housing prices are closer to triple. If you work remote, I'm not sure what the benefit would be. But otherwise, if you can afford it, the PNW is pretty great (especially if you like hiking/the outdoors).

You will realize that snow is great vs 9 months of gray

1.5 Million for a 2500 sq ft house built in 1980s in a good school district, Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland and Issaquah

Investment Bank Bi-Coastal Dec 9, 2022

This. The 2400 sqft home we owned in Redmond is worth $1.5M. You can move farther out for something in the $1M range. If you can afford housing you will enjoy the temperate climate and a lot of outdoor activities. No income tax is also a bonus.

Well, there is WA LTC tax coming soon next year. That makes income tax to be non-zero.

Minneapolis is probably a cooler city at this point. Seattle was mostly ruined by tech bros.

TC or GTFO

Honestly I’d take MPLS over Seattle for weather and COL. Outdoor activities might favor Seattle by a little, but not much…don’t sleep on MN’s northern shore, the boundary waters, and the fact that everyone’s grandparents own a lake cabin. Tech ops definitely favor Seattle but not by enough to make up for the COL. Tech roles with Medtronic, 3M, Target, etc. will pay well.

When I interviewed with Target several years ago, their offer was 140k. Not great when compared to FAANG.

Deloitte IHcp02 Dec 9, 2022

Okay, and… I have no idea when that was, for what role, or for how many YOE lol. $140k in mpls is probably close to $250k in the Bay

The answers you get on this forum are mostly going to be tech bros with no life really. We moved from Chicago, weather wise comparable, and we love the PNW weather. The lack of state tax is a big PLUS. Weather wise all you need is a puffer jacket. Thats it. The kids hear have never experienced frostbite winters

Snowflake zgnP46 Dec 9, 2022

You need waterproof puffer jacket …. Year 2022: - first sunny day - end of June - first time you had enough of warm weather - August - the month there is no air to breeze due to wild fires - September - rainy season starts mid October till next May- June When we get little snow 3-5 days a year, the area dies out because they are not dealing with it as in Midwest More job opportunities, no state tax. Nature is great if and when weather cooperates. International airport is a big deal, but it’s not an issue for MPLS or ORD. Hawaii as close as East coast.

So one data point? What about all the years we didn’t have that

Tesla ct33gh Dec 9, 2022

I’m considering moving to MPLS, oops :p seems like a really cool city from when I visited and I’m a cold weather native so I don’t mind that part

Moved from Midwest to Seattle for better long-term job opportunities, diversity and better travel options nearby. Also, for kids' education / activities.
