I feel my life is insanely miserable, I dread waking up every single weekday and weekends are just an anticipation for the crap that’s going to come on Monday. My manager is horrible, she is the most untalented, uninspiring, political and bureaucratic non-leading leader I’ve ever met in my career, she kills the passion I have for this field. For example, since she doesn’t understand anything of what we do, she has us spend 90% of our time on documentation and process. She is from academia and she forces us to write useless documentation for even minor components in latex (yes, latex). She has us document API calls of internal classes with sequence diagrams. Crazy. These components will inevitably be refactored and completely change 2 weeks from now, since we are a startup. People started to like her because they figured out they can just play politics with her and she will never question their work, so people can literally close one easy ticket every couple days and she’s perfectly and cluelessly happy, thinking these people worked very hard. Unfortunately, my startup equity appreciated considerably so I cannot leave without paying an insane amount of taxes due to exercising cost, while the startup is not liquid. Also, internal mobility is not a thing for me, I’ve been assigned to rot under this manager. I don’t know what to do anymore, I started reading books on stoicism, and pretty much all my friends either tell me to leave and lose the equity, or stay and suffer for a few more months, since the startup is late stage so eventually is going to reach a closure.
You have to leave. Trust me the money is not worth your mental health.
Some people do not know how to manage. It is worth seeing that. It will help you become a better manager someday. And a better manager of managers.
It’s interesting that she had a 8 months stint at Uber as engineering manager before joining here, which is dubiously short, especially for a manager. I wonder if she got canned or managed out because engineers complained?
A manager leaving after 8 months means she was shit canned. Like, her reports and her boss and even her boss’s boss hated her. Even a dead body can be a manager for at least a year.
I’m wondering why there are so many bad managers and no one cares? I’ve seen only managers on pip who didn’t play politics. I am sorry I think you can try to speak with skip if he is not best friend with your current boss or make a count on your screen when vesting is done.
My skip recently left so there’s basically a completely new guy who hasn’t started calibrating how things work here, so it’ll be months if not years before he might figure out this manager is an issue.
Why can't you learn from others and close one easy ticket and be happy and do LC side by side. Good thing with these kind of manager is that they are easy to play with as they don't know complexity of a product and bad at performance evaluation. Use that to your advantage. You are getting a valuable lesson by her, don't ruin you life.
Some people want their grind to make some impact at least. Also thing with these managers they still prod you randomly for irrelevant shit and that is also hard to play along for some as well. I used to be in that situation, that all builds up slowly even if you try to ignore
Agreed. I think for some people, trying to do less just because management celebrates mediocrity may result in cognitive dissonance which leads to burnout. The truth is, managers like this are more common than it needs to be... it may be in OP’s best interest to figure out how to emotionally detach from work, but do just enough to not hurt their reputation and credibility
Was she ever in consulting? Sounds like your run of the mill small shop cun... I mean consultant making into management
No she was in academia... some PhD and then researcher or something like that... stayed for about a decade in several universities, then moved to the industry
> several universities Curious
You cannot change teams?
GTFO
You gotta specify why or you're not memeing just being a poopoohead
He's a peepeehead
Leave asap.
Well that was mean editing out the whole comment
I decided to leave as I’m under the similar situation. Money doesn’t matter for few things.
You exercised already?
No :(
Then why would you owe taxes
