I'm planning to join Cruise as a senior machine learning engineer. However, since I already experienced layoffs in January, I'm concerned that I may be laid off again in this tough job market. I'm aware that GM is planning to cut $2 billion in costs and has implemented a voluntary separation program for 5,000 employees to avoid layoffs. I'm wondering if there is any pressure from GM to cut costs specifically for Cruise, given that it is not profitable, which could potentially result in layoffs. TC: 0 New TC: 400K
You should be safe
“Safe, for now”
It's all based on performance right now. If we don't hit the $2 billion goal in 2 yrs, then it'll be cuts and performance won't matter. You should be fine if you perform well for these next two years, but if we don't meet the goal, you should be worried, $400k is a good number to make cuts. Be strong, but be certain you plan for the future.
Are you talking about Cruise hitting $2b in 2 years?
Cruise is a part of GM. If GM doesn't hit $2 b in 2 years, that means Cruise didn't either. Arden won't care where the cuts come from, as long as the cuts add up to the remaining amount to hit $2b.
No one knows. Also why do you care, not like you have another offer do you? The market is tough you don’t have options just join what you get for the time being
Well said
I have another offer and trying to make the best decision for my family 😢
If you have an offer at a revenue generating company, you should take it. GM is clearly putting pressure on Cruise to cut costs and begin to generate some sort of return for the massive investment made to date. The reason that Cruise put 20% of staff on PM or DNM ratings was to create an option for “performance-based“ layoffs later this year.
What is PM or DNM ratings?
Also how likely do you think cruise will have layoffs within this year?
Cruise is an especially easy target for layoffs as there are no unions. Add to this, the fact that the SLT Inner Circle has continually avoided cuts for itself while imposing hardship on the rest of the company and you have all the signal that you need to make a good decision.
Op. What is the other offer?
just pick whatever. If you can pull 2 offers at the same time in this condition then why you care bout it lol.
Nope 📈
GM just laid off a bunch of people during the weekend so…
We indeed we did. So you should be safe my friend
Wait. I thought enough people took the voluntary separation program that no layoffs were needed. Are these performance based?
