Lack of diversity in engineering division at X
I just got a verbal offer from Unity technologies for 140k base with 120k RSU that vests over 4 years and would have to relocate to SF. There’s also annual refreshers of 20-30% of initial stock offering annually but no other bonus. I currently live in Denver working at Lockheed Martin making 125k and no RSUs and 3-6k annual bonus. I think the team at Unity would be much stronger and I would learn and grow a lot more as an engineer but I also love my current job and coworkers. I also love living in Denver and don’t know much about living in SF and the office at Unity in SF. Should I take the new position or stay? I’m a little afraid of being stagnant where I’m at as the work isn’t as challenging as I think it would be at Unity. Also it in my mind it would be easier to transition to other tech companies from Unity instead of LM. Thoughts? Edit: forgot to mention, 5 yoe Edit 2: update - changed to work out of the Bellevue office with an offer of 125k base + 108k RSU. I decided to accept that offer. If anyone knows anything about Bellevue or the Unity office there and could share their thoughts, I would appreciate!
If there is no family, follow where you learn.
In this climate might want to consider which industry is safer. RSUs have a one year cliff btw
Ya I know. How do you like Unity? What would you do in my situation?
If you want to take the offer, do not quit your LM job immediately, instead do a two-week leave, in case Unity rescinds your offer.
How do RSU work? I see it a lot but is it the same amount per year?
You get offered some amount of RSU and each company has their own vesting schedule. For Unity, you get 1/4 of the amount after your first year. Then the rest is prorated out in quarterly installments.
Consider Anduril? It’s like a mix of big-tech + defense. And, like LM, the business is more recession-resistant than Unity’s. DM if you want to explore.
The 20\30% refresher that recruiter (or hiring manager) gave you is a bit optimistic. Sure, it can go up to 40% but not everyone gets it. I’d say the average is more 15/20% Also, 140k base for 5 yoe in SF sounds low. I’m not in the US, but it should be closer to 170/200.
Good to know about the refreshers. And ya, the reason for the base is because the offer is for IC5. I tried for IC6 but said I wasn’t quite ready yet.
5 yoe can definitely go for IC6, you have been down-leveled. Many new graduates can go from IC4 to IC6 within 3 years. And even in US office, there is title inflation, people get promoted easily. But one thing you need to know, promotion cycle only happens once a year in May. If you join now as IC5, you highly need to wait for another whole year to IC6. IC6 is really not that difficult, doesn’t need significant contributions.
SF sucks now post-pandemic. If Unity was remote I’d say go for it. Stay with LM
What about Bellevue? I had option for remote but offer was like 110k base + 90k RSU. I don’t really want to work full remote anyways. I like having option to go in the office and work with the team.
Unity just laid off 284 people today - including whole teams. I’d check to make sure the offer is still good. Side note, no way I would move to SF for 140k esp given where the stock is right now.
I actually decided for the Bellevue office. Offer is 125k base + 108k RSU.
I work at Unity and I love it but …SF is horrific. I’ve been to the city several times on work trips. The office is nice but definitely do not accept w/o visiting first. Just go for a weekend at least. Keep in mind it’s so expensive that it doesn’t matter that the Unity offer is more $….it will all go down the drain toward regular cost of living.
What about the Bellevue office? I actually decided to work at that office.
Unity had layoffs yesterday (it's in the news). What did you decide on?
I saw. My offer is still good. About to sign. Going to Bellevue office instead of SF. Offer is 125k base + 108k RSU for IC5. The people who got laid off were not engineers from my understanding. My offer is unaffected.
There was post about a person leaving Amazon for unity and their unity offer got rescinded
