Will be joining FB as a Data Scientist, Analytics next month. Wanted to know if it is possible to transition from DS to PM at Facebook in 2-3 years at a comparable level
Why do you want to make that transition? I always see PMs begging DS for favours but never the other way around (at FB and also other companies like Snap)
I believe that the PM career path is more defined and as one grows up the ladder, there is a better opportunity to move into management positions as a PM as compared to a DS
Trump is president anything is possible. Not kidding about that.
For discipline change you’ll have to re-interview (which is not much of a hassle since if you fail you just continue doing the same job and you try again later) and level depends on your current level and interview performance (e.g. if your level is already too high it’s harder to make a lateral move)
Thank you for the info !! Is there a well defined career track for data scientists within FB, given that it is a new job family ? Also, how does the pay for DS compare to the pay for PM’s ? I will be joining at E4 Data Scientist
There’s established career path for DS - I know many 5s, few IC 6s, many Directors, etc. I believe pay is in the same range as PM (for the same level).
DS comp is much less than PM. Analytics is second class citizen here in general
If you wouldn’t mind, could you please elaborate more on comp differences and second-class status?
Mind sharing your FB offer? Considering a move to a FB DS myself. 6yr workex + phd. Agree with your worry of PM > DS having a more defined path into senior management. Would hate to stall out in the DS path.
My offer is for Data Science, Analytics not Core Data Science Base - 135k RSU - 160k over 4 yrs Sign on - 30k Bonus - 15%

What did u do to successfully prepare? I know its been asked over and over, but a successful prep strategy should be shared! (And my onsite for FB DS Analytics is next week)
Second this ^. Would love to hear a bit more re. your onsite experience.

I heard it’s difficult and you’ll be down leveled. Make a PM sponsor and get to help him/her on projects as a PM
Thank for the response, with this approach of making another PM a sponsor, is there an opportunity to move at the same level or will there be down leveling. Also, is there a pay difference between the two roles ? I have total 4 yrs of workex and will be joining at E4
