IRS Warns Thousands of Taxpayers They Could Face Jail Time
“I came to USA with a suitcase and $5” “My fathers annual salary was used for flights to the USA” “I starved myself for days until some kind gentleman agreed to give me a minimum wage job in a canteen”
the hard truth is, the vast majority of people who make it to the US are from top quadrant from India. Having said that, people born here have had a much more comfortable life
Not necessarily. If you speak English with a heavy Indian accent probably yes. If you speak pretty fluently w/o much of an accent probably not. Having said that speaking English with or without an accent isn’t a benchmark for one’s intelligence. Folks from poorer strata of society tend to work harder.
Usually, they are highly exaggerated narratives rather than blatant lies. most Indians who come here take an education loan (which is not common in India), work in food courts to pay the rent while living in a 1BR with 3-4 folks, and yes, spending a ton of money for the flights by Indian standards. But yeah, most people aren’t starving.
I love when Indians bring this up like no Americans take out loans for school
Indians have a hard time to find jobs as they need a company to sponsor visa. If you go to a college career fair, hardly 5% companies do that. Competition is intense for these companies and they prefer citizens first.
Immigrants from other countries say their sad stories better. All Iranian women were harassed by religious zealots. All Chinese immigrants were forced to practice Christianity in secret All African immigrants went through blood diamond journey Etc etc
It's only those who talk. My family is by no means poor in India so I never write any sympathy message. While those who achieve that write it out. It's the same "bus driver's child cracks IIT". News is made of sensesnalization
Plenty of people tell the old walked barefoot for 10 miles in the snow uphill both ways story.
Pulled myself up by my bootstraps
I did shopping at Walmart for first 4 years at grad shool until I could afford Whole Foods
I came to the US with $15K in my savings account and an education loan of $20K. Lived with 3 other guys in a 2 BR apt until I graduated, cooked my own meals, worked a campus job to sustain, so yeah it wasn’t exactly a ghetto life, but it wasn’t privileged either.
I came with $500 in my wallet and my first semester tuition paid. Worked a minimum wage jobs and paid my tuition using credit cards and balance transfers (back when tuition wasn’t insane like now). So yes like most GenXers i relate
Are you referring to recent Indian immigrants or all
Any big CEO like our own, the Nutanix guy, Vinod Khosla, all claim they came to USA with suitcase and $5 because their parents were so broke
there is some truth to it
