Moving from Microsoft India to Redmond (or Vancouver)

I just got a new grad offer at Microsoft India. However, I really want to move to Redmond. I was wondering, whether or not an internal transfer is even possible, and if yes, then how does it work. I would really appreciate any help! Thanks a lot! TC: Rs. 13 lpa + 21 L Stock vested over 4 years + 5 L Joining Bonus (Please don't hate)

Thanks again for any responses!

They are not going to transfer you to the US until you make SDE 2 at least. Work on surviving your first few years first and make yourself valuable. Then you can think about moving internationally

oh, I guess that does seem fair enough.. So do you have any idea how long it might take for the whole thing... Like from a new grad to SDE II and then to the US.. Thanks again :)

Probably 5 years would be reasonable.

Give or take 5 years. Why do you want to move there even before you have started at your job?

well, I really wanted to move on to the bay area... i want to know what the silicon valley is all about..

Do a graduate degree in the US and find a job in SV, you’ll have better control over professional life.

It will easily take you 5-6 years to transfer to US. Add 2 more years to transfer your L-1 to H1B if you want to work for another company here. Else you can take the short route of doing a MS here.

JPMorgan Chase əๅɓoo⅁. OP Jan 11, 2020

yeah, i guess thats right.. However an MS is not something I really want to go ahead with at the moment..

Join amazon as a new grad. Make SDE 2 within 2 years. Come to Seattle 6 months after that. MSFT has a wait till level 62. Will take atleast 4 years.

Amazon klokovi Jan 11, 2020

Small correction : After becoming sde 2 , you have to wait for atleast year before being eligible for internal transfer internationally

Microsoft summakizhi Jan 11, 2020

Not true. I have friends who moved as SDE 1s and those who started looking for roles as soon the promo kicked in and were here within 6 months.

The Grass is always greener on the other side. Remember that with the current GC backlog for Indians it might take 20+ years after your arrival to get a GC.

More like a 100 years

Yes, op. Go to Canada, not US

Microsoft cd..ls Jan 11, 2020

A few Indians in my group are taking opportunities to go back. Not sure what the incentive is, but it certainly seems they want senior people over there

Amazon Tdxv31 Jan 11, 2020

You ppl wont spend a penny and just want to move to west , screw other ppl On OPT by taking their jobs .

Microsoft summakizhi Jan 11, 2020

Dei dei, first of all you are stealing jobs from Americans. Why can’t OP steal! Otha!

Wow thats low key pretty agressive.. What does spending money have to do with this... if you are good enough, you'll get it, right?

Atlassian gandola Jan 12, 2020

Please dont come here. Seattle has really bad weather. If you come now it will take at least 30 years for you to get the GC 1: become manager there and then come on L1A 2: Vancouver is as same as seattle with huge pay cut. Yes package in $ is alluring at this stage of your life but look at big picture. Thanks me later for my advice.

Walmart p31027 Jan 12, 2020

How many years does L1 take?

Atlassian gandola Jan 12, 2020

L1 when u r manager outside us and then come here and then apply gc in eb1 total should not take more than 3 years to get gc but for eb1 also indian people its delayed

If you have an option go to seattle not vancouver. You wont enjoy housing price or traffic in vancouver. Seattle is also expensive but cheaper than vancouver relative to the income.
