My manager said we (including himself) would be jobless if we don't launch the project by the end of the year. Our team's been around ~1 year and our project is still prelaunch ... At least 5 people have already left the team. I had considered internal transfer but my manager will block it given the current situation. What should I do?
Search for a better company and resign
Leave. It's high risk low reward. Even if you ship you'll get nothing out of it. Not worth it at all
Right. Best you can do is “meets expectations”
Not necessarily. I got a l6 promo at amazon out of a project that slid over the finish line and then flamed out in the market. Been on a few of those and saw l7 and even l8 promos. This projects tend to build up backlogs of promo candidates that get cleared at ship time. People leaving could be good to clear the deck. Really the question is if op believes that his promo hinges on that though. Only op can answer that. I would suggest doing some detective work with whoever is involved with that process these days.
Start interviewing now
L4 and L5 SDEs don't lose their jobs because of a failed project, they just get reorged into a different team. Your L6 SDM might get the boot though, that part is true enough.
Misery loves company. Manager will likely try to put the blame on his engineer resulting in them both getting let go
If 5 engineers have already left I find it hard to believe that upper management will believe the SDM blaming his engineers for the failure
Why would you be jobless? Your manager has accountability, not you
This is true but Insecure manager will pass it onto the reportees instead of owning it up like an adult
Incorrect at Amz the manager can’t blame the workers for a failed launch. They are the leader, and will be held accountable for the fail.
How the fuck is this a never ending saga of Amazon threads on Blind talking about how it’s a piece of shit.
Because you only make posts to complain. You don't make posts saying your are happy
Same goes for other places, and still the people complaining are from Amazon
You won’t lose your job. Your manager cannot block your internal transfer unless you are on the dev plan.
But they should make sure the transfer is a solid thing before they get off the team. They surely dont want the mngr finding out before the transfer is complete
Find a better human being to work with.
This is your manager. I clearly mentioned that “we would be jobless if we don’t launch the project by the end of the year.” And yet, here you are, wasting time on blind. And not only the quality of your work is shit but also the quality of post is so bad that no one posted TC or GTFO. Let’s discuss your PIP in the morning.
Your manager will PIP you for waiting til the next morning.
Be a good Amazon manager and blame it on your reports.
