Hi blinders, I am a new grad who will be starting work soon in midtown Manhattan. I am stuck on where to live and would like your advice. For reference I am - male - black - age: 21-23 - open to having roommates (2-3) ——————————————————————— My priorities - Commute: I’m okay with a 40min commute to work, however, that long of a commute to go to NYC for other reasons would be annoying. - People: I want to meet exciting/influential people so living in NYC would be better for that. - Night life: Not really into it but maybe I’ll change. ——————————————————————— My Budget: -New Jersey budget: 1.5k rent -NYC budget: 1.3k rent The reason for the lower budget for NYC is because of city tax (~550 per month). **** Update **** - New Jersey budget: 1.8k rent - NYC budget: 1.6k rent I am open to increase this if given valid reasons but only by ~$200/mo ——————————————————————— I attached a poll but I also want reasons/discussion on your opinions. #housing #nyc #newyork #newjersey #jc #hoboken #manhattan #queens TC: 185k YOE: 0
Long Island City in Queens would be a great option for you. It's low crime and modern, the people are friendly, and it's only a 15 - 20 minute train ride to Midtown.
I’ve looked into LIC it’s way above my budget
Where have you looked? I'm seeing many options either at or below your budget. I'd try Spareroom, NYC Facebook Housing Groups, LinkedIn NYC Housing Groups, and Craigslist.
OP with 185k TC you can afford $3k studio in Manhattan in a new building.
I want to save money
You’re 21 - 23, live life rather than save money…
Queens u can get
Have you looked at any of the student housing areas? The know there are spots by Columbia on the UWS where rents are cheaper. You wouldn’t be too far from midtown and can probably find roommates.
You could get your own place in Astoria for around that amount I think
As someone who really values saving money - you’re making a lot more than I did at that age. Just invest, and do the best you can to live frugally but don’t be afraid to pay what you need for an apartment. I always live frugally and I’m in my 30s just because I don’t believe in living in excess. I have a a nice car but I also bike a lot. Walk to the train etc. Safety and comfort can’t be compromised with. I was mugged and jumped twice in my early 20s living in areas of LA that I wasn’t familiar enough with. You don’t need to shell out for the nicest place you see but you can afford more than that on your budget. I recommend doing a budget for yourself to see what you have to work with.
My advice: unless you’re paying off debt, raise your budget and live in the city. I lived in Manhattan making $75k (granted this was a while ago) and I wouldn’t trade that time for the world. Your 20s in NYC is a once in a lifetime experience. You have your whole life to be frugal. You won’t have another opportunity like this ever. By your 30s, many of your friends will be married, start having kids, move to the suburbs, just generally drift apart. Trust me, it sucks. You’ll wish for those good old days to come back, but they never will. Enjoy your youth while you can. You’ll miss it when it’s gone.
Get 2 roommates live in murray hill, it will work with your budget, probably 1.5 k
lol bro 1.3 k rent nyc is impossible unless you live in BK or you want to live in a rat infested dump in manhattan
Willing to up to 1.5k
Lmfao 🤣 still not possible. Try 1.8-1.9k and now you are being reasonable
