I need some career advice, as I'm a young (under 30) worker not experienced in this stuff. My small (<150 employees) company is about to go through large layoff (30%) wave. Some of my higher ups are getting let go, and I've been offered the chance to move into a job spot that will be open from them getting let go. For me, it's a combined "lateral move" (one dept. to another) and also a "vertical move" (promotion). So my question: should I aim for a raise with this move? Reasons I see to not ask for a raise: - I'm not getting laid off and a lot of people are - Layoffs indicate the company needs the money to build runway instead of giving raises - The company is not performing up to expectations (hence layoffs) - It's not strictly a promotion, it's also a lateral move I've been working towards - I was given a promotion and fat raise a few months ago. - I've got zero years of experience in the new role and am already making it's average base comp currently in my existing role. Reasons I see to ask for a raise: - It's a promotion from low level lead role (the lowest) to middle level leadership with a lot of responsibility - Those who are getting let go from this position definitely make more than I do currently (I can't say how much though as I don't know) - I've always busted my ass and performed well, for a long time I was undercompensated. I still could be I guess. - New role would involve A LOT more responsibility, and in turn come with more anxiety, worry, etc Current TC: 120k
Don't make excuses for your employer that go against your interests
Look for a new job. Those small companies are deadend
Not if you're getting promo every year
I was director at similar size company. Care to guess if I got any offers for director position at other companies?
Based on the info you provided, I would ask for a raise in 6 months after you’ve proven yourself in the new role. Considering you already received a large raise and promotion several months ago, and this is a lateral move and you don’t have experience in this new role, asking for another salary bump will not leave a great impression on you.
If they don’t give it, he/she can just leave using the new title
Always accept a promo.
If you're taking on more responsibility, it's fair to ask if the new role comes with increased compensation to match. You're filling in a role for someone else that was probably paid more and you likely have more responsibility because you just let a bunch of people go. If the compensation doesn't increase I wouldn't be surprised or act offended, just ask if that's a conversation you can revisit in a few months when things are more settled and you've had time in the new role.
Your next layoff wave fodder
Ask for a raise if you’re going to have more responsibility. Don’t let them pile on the work without compensating for it.

Refuse the promo, or ask for a reasonable amount more that's commiserate with the added responsibility.
