Not sure if I’m underpaid, L4 business job family, only 75k base, 15k sign on. I think I need a second job, but I’m on OPT and not allowed to 1. have more than one employer (actually more complicated but it’s basically that) 2. work on things not equivalent to my degree, so driving for uber is not an option, but I really can’t save any money with my current paycheck. Suggestions? Or anyone wants to learn mandarin and Venmo?
Hmm, why not push hard and get better offer ?
Amazon business analyst Seattle based, I don’t think the pay will increase next year while sign on will actually decrease...
Wow Amazon is really low pay for that position. That doesn't meet standard of living requirements for Seattle.
You should do a breakdown of your expenses here. I know plenty of people that make less than that and still live pretty well in Seattle.
Can you switch to a data engineer? Pays a lot more
I’m taking online courses and hoping to get into data science
Also data engineer seems less interesting to me since it’s more in infrastructure and not analysis, that’s why I’m aiming for data science instead, but it’s not easy since most companies will prefer a PhD degree in statistics or related
What the fuck is wrong with new grads today ?
Hmm??
And I’m wondering is this a standard pay rate for L4 BA in amazon? What about similar roles in other companies?
I know a few friends in the Seattle area who are architects and make significantly lower than you and still get through (barely). Not saying that it’s easy but it’s possible. Based on your base- your monthly TC is ~$4300. 1. Rent- If you share a room in a 2bed 2bath house in beacon hill. Your rent should be ~$1200. You also don’t need a car since there is good public trans to work 2. Utilities (mobile+internet+ elec etc)- $150 (also amazon covers monthly phone bill). 3. Groceries- $50 per week- $200 4. Eating out- $15/day- $450 5. Drinks on weekends- $30 per week- $120 monthly 6. Fitness- $50 per month (golds gym) This is $2200. Again, this is the bare minimum but one can scrape through and save some.
Eating and drinking probably doubles up and Uber fare is missed. I’m a girl, I shop, and recreational things like skiing, watching shows and etc. I’m living a good life I think but there’s still this gap when you realize you are working your ass off at a top company and still have nothing left every end of the months and can’t see the day that I can afford purchasing a property while a lot of SDEs I know already have.
Starting a side gig is always a good idea. Provides supplemental income and makes one less reliant on the job. I don’t believe that being a girl and shopping are directly correlated. Boys love shopping as well (I too am a girl). No matter how much you make, living within your means is important and one thing that’s usually discounted is lifestyle creep. Transitioning from student life to a job, expenses start going up significantly and continues to do so as we start making more money. Identifying those and keeping those in check help. Once you start saving $1-2k per month now and investing it wisely, you can afford a decent house in the not so distant future. In today’s day and age it’s tough to compare ones life with that of an sde. Their skill sets are more highly desired than others and that’s why they get paid more. If you want to get paid that way, why not learn coding and apply for similar jobs.
This assumes you are single. If not, I get it why it’s difficult.
You can always get a side gig but seriously. Try to live within your means. It’s a life skill and everyone has to do it. Don’t compare yourself to others and try to get what others have or do.
Agreed if you want to purchase a place then it's the extra shopping or trips worth it? Read some of the books on the wealthy, they save a ton through things like public transport, making their own meals etc.
What is your designation and location?
