Hello, My partner is a consultant at Accenture with 3 YOE (all at Accenture), with engineering background (not computer science or maths). She's mainly working on tech-oriented projects (digital strategy / AI). She doesn't have an elaborate tech skillset but she's picking it up (Azure certifications, SQL etc), and really likes it. She wants an entry in tech. Obviously PM would be ideal but from what I've been reading around here it's super complicated and competitive, especially without strong background in tech. Could people here give us some advice or example of roles she could apply for ? Her top targets would be Google and Microsoft but she's definitely open to other companies as well. Thanks ! #tech #consulting #pm
I’m not sure what you mean. From your description, she’s already in tech.
She's a consultant and wants a gig in a tech company instead.
She is "she". Ask her to reach out to recruiters directly and apply to jobs. The success rate for women getting a call is 80%.
Yup. We're just trying to focus on the most realistic starting points rather than applying to jobs "randomly". Would love to get some insights from Blind about how consultants transionned to Tech.
She doesn’t have developer skills or PM skills/experience. What is her expectation?
Well she does have PM skills, but not enough to be considered for PM into those big firms because it's becoming crazy competitive. EMs at McKinsey have been regularly transitioning to PM roles without being specifically PMs or having developer skills.
Anyone can become PM that’s the realty now. It just takes a lot of hard work and patience . There is ton of materials what there .. I interview pm’s n also mentor. Only thing she has to do is keep learning hustling and doing mock interviews with this she will eventually crack . I would say if she is interested in tech aka coding or DS,DE her opportunities will multiply.. I know how desperate companies go for diversity hires in coding related roles.
Thanks for your comment. Could you orient us towards some quality material ? There's indeed a lot out there but variance in quality is huge
Just start off with basic pm materials , there is one famous course in udemy I think the authors name is Evan and cole. Then read code decode by Lewis Lin and YouTube videos .. once she starts interviewing she can subscribe to exponent . For system design done primer and grokking the system design by educative io .. that’s it after this just do mocks. Overall if she dedicates 4-5 hrs a week, she should be done with basic prep in 3-4 months
Is she interested in coding ? If so she can focus on python / react/ selenium. that will be easy ( relatively) and start building a web dev / QE career. There are a lot of coding boot camps that can help with this . If non coding - then she can do TPM or PM Of these TPM is relatively easier to get foot in the door , compared to product. There is a ton of material for these job families as well .PM will also be harder to get in as newbie - only tech giants are willing to take the risk on hiring and training folks with no/ little exp
She is more interested in the business aspect of coding, e.g complex querying through SQL + BQ and getting the outputs on Tableau or Data Studio afterwards. Will be looking at TPM openings as well, thanks !
I don’t think becoming a PM is that hard if she’s done some technical work at Accenture. It depends on the product. I’d say rack up all the certifications you can, ask for more technical work on projects in your current role, and then target companies with products you understand enough to riff on in an interview and go for it. My friend worked for Accenture for seven years and all his technical acumen was self-taught in Business Excellence. He’s now building out an automation practice at a mid-sized consulting firm. He found a niche and went deep on it. Now he’s indispensable at his new firm.
