I've been on my current team for almost 2 years without any promos. Recently our whole family including our kids contracted COVID. I was not able to focus on work and took a couple of weeks off to recover. When I came back, my manager told me that my performance for this sprint has been lacking and called me out in front of the whole team. It seemed as though he did not understand that I was sick and only valued performance. I would understand if my performance was bad previously. However, I've been getting good to fair reviews on my connects. Since then, I lost all the motivation to work. I hate how our manager talks in an authoritative condescending tone to our team members and how our skip manager influenced all our team to randomly call people on off-hours without giving notices. I'm burnt out by our team's culture and management. The team has poor WLB and slow promos. 5+ people already left the team since I joined, some only lasting a couple of months. I haven't had any promotions for the last two years. I'm a bit worried if I switch now, I'll have to start from scratch to get a promotion on the new team. Shall I just suck it up or jump ships now? I need help!
This sounds really bad. You should definitely leave, be careful about your next team.
Average promos are 3-3.5 years at MSFT. This can go faster or slower based on you, your manager, the business need, promo budget (different bucket than salary bucket), etc. Unless you're completely awesome or were under-leveled coming in, then you need to reset your expectations. That said, the manager sounds like an ass and it doesn't sound like a good scenario. Get out without burning bridges. Run to something vs from something (make yourself believe it so others will believe it too). If you love it, bring your friends.
Your mental health should be your top priority. Jump ship as soon as possible without worrying about the past. Disappointed with this kind of treatment here.
Might as well join Amazon, sounds like you’ve been through worse.
