Hello everyone, I just graduated in CS from a tier 1 college in India with great grades. I have 8 months of experience as an intern up till now. In a month I begin a job at a startup(TC: Rs 30L). Based on what I saw and heard in Amazon, there is some concept of ceiling in the software world. I was able to get some idea by googling it, but can someone explain what this is ? A Principal Engineer in my team said that SDE3 is the terminal post in most companies. So does that mean the earnings basically saturate at this point ? Obviously, like everyone else I'm primarily interested in the money. I love Software but not maths related stuff such as ML/AI/Quant/Data Science. Is it possible to get in the ballpark of HFT(High Frequency Trading) or Data Science(A guy I know got a 115% hike in an year) kind of money by working your ass off in a software job and going beyond expectations ? In India most people see MBA or a MS in a Foreign University as an escape to make some real money. Is that sort of the only practical option for making money ? TL;DR what is an optimal way to make/increase money given my background. P.S. Advice on Work Life Balance is appreciated too :-) Thanks
Don't say you're joining Flipkart or CN?😅
What's cn
Code nation
Which start up pays 30 LPA to fresher dude? Just Curious. And you must've left Amazon for it.
It could be Code Nation, but as OP mentioned that he's not into those maths prodigy doing hard core CP, so this reduces his chance to get into CN.😅
CN pays 24 LPA as CTC afaik
30L for a fresher?
How much of 30L is paper money?
around 28 in cash, 2 in shares. So 28 is paper money I guess.
Nope,2L is paper money since the startup isn't public .
I earn 33L as a fresher ,De Shaw . So 30L isn't unheard of .
Which Tier 1 college ?
Or NYU - Nangloi Yamunapar University
Well being a SWE is the most optimal way of making money currently. You have already made a start. SWE2 TC can go upto 65-70 LPA with 3-6 yoe. Sr SWE can go over 1 Cr. Principal/Staff SWEs even higher. Big Tech TC is usually a little less than HFT/Hedge fund TC, but in return you get much better WLB, more diverse problems & a more casual workplace. But SWE TC is almost always more than Data Scientist TC( Data Scientist is not the same as MLE/Applied Scientist). You can always move to US for MS. Or you can join a US company in India & transfer internally a couple of years later.
Harness for sure!! Are you from IIT R/G?
Don't be fooled by MBA, most of my friends from IIMs are making less than BTech SWEs same batch MS is only worth if you want to immigrate to US and that is becoming harder and harder with always changing visa rules. TC and growth opportunity is better in india then ever I would say grow in india.
