Hi All, I recently completed the Data Scientist loop at Amazon. 3 teams are interested in moving ahead with me. So I wanted to get some ideas about team culture, career growth for DS in each teams and industry relevance. 1) Amazon Gaming Services - (NYC, Seattle, Remote) ML focused work, some A/B testing as well 2) Amazon Advertising, Sponsored Products - (NYC) Optimization and A/B testing, dashboards etc, client facing 3) Amazon Business ,B2B services - (Seattle) Marketing analytics, ML I liked the work at Gaming Services (ML focused), but no idea about career growth for DS in gaming industry. I need to make a decision soon. Honest feedback would be appreciated #amazon #Facebook #datascientist #machinelearning #marketing #ibm #tech Current TC : $120k
Hey did they provide a comp range at all?
Not yet, I need to choose a team and then recruiter will start working on TC negotiation.
Are you ds or as? as in amazon work on models and ds mainly focus on metrics.
I'm a DS, true most of DS work on metrics but some teams do have DS working on models
Hearing it for first time that we get to choose teams for DS positions at Amazon. Usually is it not the interviews are team specific?
Hey - which team did you finally end up choosing?
Do you know any specifics about B2B services team ? Like what kind of services are we talking about here ? I would choose either of 2 or 3. I personally feel advertising is a good business to know, it might help you with your future moves. I wouldn't prefer gaming if all things are equal technically.
Hey, thanks for the response. So Amazon business (B2B) is building a marketing tech team and DS will be working on models that drive growth and revenue in acquisition, engagement stage of mkt funnel. My concern for this team is scale would not be huge since they are b2b. I liked the Ad tech team (sponsored ads) however the drawback is work mostly focused on a/b testing, dashboards, optimization model (<15%) and no ML modeling anytime soon. For gaming services, HM told the work would be focused on model development and a/b test. I believe there is scale because they work with data from Twitch, Luna, IMDB etc. What are your concerns for gaming service team ?
Don't get me wrong but I was talking purely from a business standpoint. For example, I worked with finance in my previous company and that really helped me with my interviews when I was talking about past projects and related metrics etc. I am not quite sure about opportunities in gaming industry outside. But you can always switch within the company once you are in. So if you feel like the tech at the gaming team is much better than the ad tech team , I think you should go with it. You can always learn about other businesses if you stay at Amazon long term
