Negotiating a higher level @Amazon

I have completed a successful interview at AWS and an offer is supposedly coming. I am interested but not so much that I want it at all costs. The issue will come down to money. I am curious if anyone has had success with negotiating an offer that is up leveled. This would be to an L8 in my case. If so appreciate any guidance or tips you can share. PM's welcome.

Let us know what's the offer. Is this for a tech role?

L8...wow... Not gonna happen easily

L8 is at par with Director I think. Are you at similar title? Are you managing a part of department by yourself?

L8 is pretty high up. Usually reserved for people who have pretty large teams under them. To give you an idea, in my org the director is level 8 and he manages at least ten level 7 managers. I have seen level 8s reporting to level 8s but usually they have very long tenancies (10 years and up). So that's gonna be tough.

L8 is a Senior Director at AMZN. At other companies it is considered VP role. AMZN is very clever as they mislabel roles to be of a lower level than they actually are so that they can pay less (frugality principle)

I don't think that's true. The problem is that at Amazon, VP level executives are hot shit. They don't give that title like is nothing. Amazon is frugal, but not with compensation.

I don't agree. I have friends there who have gone into great detail about how they feel underpaid and overworked

Can easily be done. Go for it

You interviewed for L7 and want compensation in the L8 range, is that correct? They will not give you the L7 but it's possible of you had a killer interview and met the bar as an L8 then you could negotiate compensation that is in the lower end of the range (still higher than that top end of L7). It's called an exception. And will required the hiring manager to build a case that they see you being easily promoted in 2 years or so and that your strengths will benefit the team in areas they have gaps. It will be VP, and HR approved .

Oops they will not give you the L8 :) it's early still waking up...
