This is for SDE II Vancouver. Recruiter came back with 225-250KCAD, I guess it's safe to say I can request 250k. But recruiter said I can ask for more but will require additional approval. On fyi, the highest I have seen for this role is 284K total. I am hoping to match this. How do I ask, should I just mention a real high figure and hope it comes down around that. Let's say 320k . Or should I give a range and expect them to match somewhere in between let's say 280k - 320k. This is my first FAANG offer, how do you negotiate these things like a pro. Current TC : 75k EUR YOE: 5
300k should be the target at least. Amazon have increased the pay bands
Canada pay bands are lower than the U.S.
@op where do you see that info on the highest salary in Vancouver, BC?
https://www.levels.fyi/Salaries/Software-Engineer/Vancouver-Canada/ SDE II
I don't know tbh, I am moving from Europe. Will also like an answer myself. After 225k you are almost paying 50%. Did you get an offer for 227k?
The highest is around 400k. You get to ask more if you have a competing offer. You can ask to meet that offer even if it is above 300.
Hey Deadwind. If you are in Vancouver, BC can you check my other comment about tax and share your inputs
Oh thanks. I didn't realise there was any offer with that TC. Is this for SDEII
After 227k, we will be taxed at 53% (fed + provincial). So apart from RRSP & RESP, are there other options to not pay 50+% in taxes?
Not aware of any.
I don’t see a point in earning more if I’m to pay 53% in taxes. RSU’s are taxed even higher isn’t it? The only route I see is capital gains are taxed less
Lol, 300k in Vancouver? Keep dreaming.
Why not I already see 284, how far away is that from 300. They are offering 250k without even negotiating. 300k doesn't sound like a dream anymore.
You need an offer for 250k, keep dreaming. You will never get 284k or 300k.
You are in that range, ask for 300k may land around 275k. I am also in van
Thank you. I asked. Let’s see what they come back with. How’s Vancouver btw my wife and I are scared we’ll find it hard to live well even on that salary. Especially since we really want to buy a home sometimes.
Great place to live especially if you like the outdoors. Buying a home will be very difficult since prices are absolutely insane. You can likely afford the mortgage but your downpayment will take a long time to save for.
Am a tenured sde-3 at Amazon, you can ask for any amount but anything in excess of 275k is not realistic. I'd be surprised if they even go beyond 250k tbh. For all his taunts and imbecile demeanor, yolobolo has a point. It also gives you a glimpse of how certain managers at Amazon are.
My taunts are accurate, paying someone top of the band where he/she has not proven his/her worth is just setting them for failure. Some SDMs at Amazon do that, I don't do this shit. I would hire someone at mid band and happily fight for them in performance cycle if they prove their worth. I am not here to show my leadership that I fire low performers. I already knew that OP would not listen to me and call me stupid, may be someone who is misguiding him or what not. I don't care, I said what I wanted to say. People who are calling me L4 have no idea how cut throat OLR discussions are. Also there is some guy mentioning he is earning 380 as L5. So, I think people know far better.
Well, I just asked for over 300k and it’s approved. So that’s that. At yololbolo, you can keep changing the goal post however you like. Your initial statement was that I wasn’t going to ever get it dream on etc. If you have mentioned that you may get it , but maybe not be best for your career that’s a totally new ball game. I infact asked about this in another group because I was genuinely curious and worried. But your ego got in the way of making a great point. The point about it beign stressful came much later after many prodding and bashing. And you can’t assume I wouldn’t listen. I would. You make too many wrong and bad assumptions of people you don’t even know.
@delivery hero: How much did you manage to get finally?
Don’t have the final figures yet. Hopefully before the end of the week
Please do share if you get an update.
Hey OP, can you share how much did you end up with? I'm in the same state now, just got quoted a rough figure of 245-250k while I'm doing team matching but I haven't stated any requests yet. The taxes are pretty insane in CA compared to where I live and I'm hoping to be able to negotiate a higher pay so that I can offset some of the tax. Would love to know how you fared!
I got 300k with a competing offer. I didn't push any further after the second offer
Wow that sounds good. Ok I'll try to aim for the same, also waiting on competing offers. Thank you and all the best in your new role!
