Negotiating with Amazon

I'm the OP for [Blind] Check out this post! Need help selecting offer (Software Engineering Career) https://us.teamblind.com/s/ZipwoG0q I turned Amazon down, and they came back saying that they are willing to put together another package, but they want a written commitment that I will accept that offer if they manage to put it together. The current offer is 185k base salary 665k sign on bonus paid out over 2 years 750k equity grant Total compensation over 4 years not accounting for stock price growth: 2.16m I was turning them down for Cruise which was offering 2.26m over 4 years. They are asking for a written commitment to accept their offer if they manage to make it 20% higher than Cruise's offer, i.e. ~2.7m. There is no guarantee they will manage to put that offer together. Should I take it? i.e. provide the written commitment to accept.

Amazon’s comp philosophy is pretty weird. One thing is for sure that you wont get any raise for next 4 years. You are already way above L6 band, so only way it will work for you is to get promoted to next level. Believe me L6 to L7 jump will take at-least 3 years if all the stars align in ur favor and you demonstrate that you have potential to be a PE in Amazon. Also factor in Pip risk which is high so it may all be just paper money 😃 Best of luck! Great offer in all seriousness. Have not seen anything like this.

+20% is literally an L7 offer. I think it’s a no brainer. The first two years is guaranteed TC as it is mostly cash.

CoStar Group peoplepls Aug 13, 2021

It’s 2.7m. Take that and bathe in TC. Geez.

If Google can give you one time grant to make your short term TC 500k, don't leave for Amazon. They seriously think there's only 20% chance of you lasting more than 2 years. Being the highest paid L6 in the team will make you an eyesore and you'll have to justify being there everyday. Not worth the extra 150k pre-tax, especially if it's short term. There is no long term when it comes to Amazon external hire.

This one is sobering. Hey google what level is 500k a year. Also what do you have to do to show you are worth that much when interviewing

Google lcgorrila OP Aug 13, 2021

Median L6 is only 480k a year, but that is grant comp, not vest comp.

Cruise glfc57 Aug 13, 2021

Cruise is honestly great, you will enjoy it. The AV space is really exciting and Cruise is really well positioned. If you liked the team you met, you will have a great time

Cruise glfc57 Aug 13, 2021

Also equity growth at Cruise has been solid the last few years. Went from $10 -> ~$25 per share in the last couple of years, even with covid.

Isn't Cruise own by GM? You guys don't get GM stock? How would you cash out the equity

Automating cars is the one thing I’d leave my startup to work on.

Google lcgorrila OP Aug 16, 2021

I ended up asking them for the same comp, but PE. They said no. End of story.

Google ABC-CEO Aug 16, 2021

Good for you. That's the right thing to ask for because you don't wanna be among the overzealous homegrown L6 claiming to do all the work and get paid half as you. Easy PIP target.
