How do you deal with the initial conversation about compensation expectations at the offer stages? Do you request a much higher number than you expect to receive? Avoid answering? Feel free to share stories/past experiences
It's a psychology game. If you say based on market rate and refused to tell exact numbers then they will come up with lower numbers then they will ask you your expectations and if you tell them exact numbers then obviously they will offer you lesser than that after multiple rounds of negotiation. If you are desperate then very low chances of getting good numbers if you are willing to walk away tell them that you had offer with x number which you rejected earlier. This is my experience though.
Let’s say you know you are taking a pay cut in base going to a series B startup from a public company. Better to give a number initially, maybe X% lower than current pay, to anchor higher, or keep dodging the question?
Yeah for startup you can have different strategy
As someone currently interviewing for their first startup, can you share some of the differences?
I would say that don't show them that you are desperate. Be firm in convincing them what you deserve explain them what you can bring it to the team why you should be given this much comparing to market. Each company has their internal bands and they won't budge once you seem like crossing that band limit..
1. Have some competing offers. 2. Don’t reveal you expectations until they give you a number. 3a. If low-balled, reveal competing offer and ask for more. 3b. If not low-balled, reveal parts of the competing offers that are better (base/RSU/sign-on/benefits), ask for a match. 4. Profit
Great summary
See link below. It’s s two part blog post that worked amazing for me - ended up doubling tc from initial offer. One thing I did differently was high ball my expectations by about 15% from the highest rate I found on blind - I didn’t expect to get all of it, but it stops them from repeatedly asking you and gets the ball rolling. I also used the highest TC for a given role for a given company found on Paysa. Give good reasons for EVERYTHING you ask for. https://haseebq.com/my-ten-rules-for-negotiating-a-job-offer/

You are opposite of 5’6”Indian. You seem to have multiple offers 😂
Did you expect anything less?
Nope, I would expect you have offers from “prestigious” companies 🤣
