I am a remote L6 SDE at Amazon (SDE 3). I have received TT performance rating the last 3 years and am going up for principal engineer promotion in Q1, but I am not really confident it will go through. My current target compensation is 495k. With current stock price I’ll actually make around 500-550k next year. I have an interview with Netflix coming up for a remote E5 role. Will Netflix be willing to match my Amazon comp if I interview well? Also, is scope of the E5 at Netflix similar to SDE3 at amazon? According to levels.fyi they overlap exactly. Normally I’d want to stay at Amazon to see the promotion through, but my team culture is rapidly deteriorating. We lost several of our best folks and some of the management that is left is genuinely awful. I don’t mind staying in a senior level role for a couple more years to ramp up at a new FANG if that’s what it takes to get out of my current situation.
Can’t you internally transfer to another team after Q1 given your performance history here? Would be a shame to lose a good engineer and that comp looks solid.
Being remote makes that really difficult. There are a few teams hiring in my city but nothing that interests me. If I can get an all-cash full remote $500k/yr offer from Netflix it’s gonna be hard to turn that down.
What’s your total work experience? Are you pushing for E6?
11 YOE. 4 years at SDE 3. I haven’t talked to the recruiter yet but the req is E5.
If you are close to principle then maybe you should aim for senior staff at Netflix if it exists? Amazon L6 is a wide band and potentiality maps to more than senior even at other FAANG.
This is funny. Amazon L6 may be wide but it certainly doesn’t map to senior staff anywhere.. specially at Netflix (which doesn’t have senior staff.. only staff & principal). Most of Amazon L6 comp band is covered by Netflix L5 band.
It does. Amazon L6 close to promo should apply for staff roles elsewhere. I don’t think you realize how wide L6 is. Don’t just focus on comp but look at scope.
When contemplating a career decision between Netflix and Amazon, the choice should be contingent upon your overarching career objectives. If immediate financial gains are your primary focus, Netflix is a viable option. However, if you aspire to nurture a long-term and progressive career trajectory, Amazon presents a more compelling choice. At Netflix, advancement may become stagnant at the E5 level, notwithstanding the enticing all-cash compensation structure. It is my professional opinion that your career development may encounter limitations within this framework. Thus, prudent consideration of this aspect is advisable when making your decision. ;)
Add: or you could explore the option of aiming for an E6 position at Netflix from the outset.
Netflix L6 is almost a no go.. As for career growth.. to each his own. I’d argue higher levels/titles are pointless unless they’re matched by wallets. If you want level growth, definitely Amazon is a better alternative
Goodness, please go for this. Netflix isn’t perfect, and I have a love-hate relationship with their product, but I have a lot of respect for their engineering teams, even if it’s viewed by some as fairly austere/caustic/a bit cutthroat. They really have had, again, from my limited POV, a very consistent approach to their engineering culture and expectations of engineers. And goodness, their severance package at least used to be insanely generous (4–6 mos. full salary), they give you a parachute when you join. And… I don’t know if this has changed, but for that level, their compensation should pretty easily match what you were making. In cash. Lastly, everyone I’ve ever met from there, even briefly, from IC on up to Director, has been intelligent and empathetic, to the point of making an impression on me. I’m really loving my time at Zillow now, but they’d be on my short list, and maybe at the top, the next time I consider my next role.
Yeah, comp will be better
When you get an offer from Netflix, would Amazon match the offer? Or is it more of an org thing
Amazon used to have a policy where they would “dive and save” employees with top performance scores if they got external offers. They would typically match or slightly beat comp for a short duration typically to hold the employee over until their next promo. I dunno if they are still doling these out in the current climate.
Comp can improve, but career growth is stuck. So depending on what you want.

Are you sure that Netflix is offering remote ?
remote positions at Amazon are being shut down :(
The job req says remote. I am talking with the recruiter next week but I’ve seen several posts on here from people getting recent remote offers from Netflix. Also my remote position is safe at Amazon for now at least. It will be “reviewed on an annual basis.”
