What worked for you? Also how much % more to ask for before bring considered obnoxious? Avoiding competing offers as a reasons, of course
Competing offers are pretty much the only reason people have to negotiate with you unless you're some special case.
That's not true. I've negotiated without competing offers. They have reasons to negotiate if they want you. Period.
Yeah, same here
'I need 2 weeks to consider this offer and make a decision, but i can sign it right now if i can get $_$'
Does that work?
'That's fine, take your 2 weeks'
Having a job currently is also a "competing" offer. Ty need to entice you to leave. That's leverage you can also use.
Good idea, ty
Yeah I've done that. I kept insisting how my current job was great and that I didn't really have a reason to leave. I insisted a lot of the fact that I was taking a risk switching companies and that I needed incentive to do so. I kept asking for more until they said they couldn't do more. Then I told them, well forget it it's not enough for me, let's not do it. Then they offered $20k more on the sign on bonus. It's not much but it was easy.
I have used this always and negotiated significantly
From what I know you won't be able to get anything significantly above their offer.
Most people I've talked to didn't negotiate. They come at your with the best offer off the bat which should be top of market. If you don't believe them then you have to bring data points (other higher offers). Otherwise you risk making yourself look bad or greedy and getting your offer rescinded. I personally did not feel trying to squeeze out another 20k was worth the potential downside but to each his own.
There are so many books on negotiating. Read a few should get you enough ideas and strategies.
Whst does the last sentence mean?
I'm looking for advice other than "have competing offers to use as leverage"
