Netflix isn’t getting their money’s worth?

If Netflix consistently pays the top of the market for engineers and PMs, one would expect innovation that is top of the market. Do they pay all that money to AB test video images and create a Skip Intro button? Where is all this money going? Edit: Many of the responses be like “video streaming is hard!” Not doubting that. This post is about the comparison between Netflix and other companies. Netflix pays the top but doesn’t deliver the top even if the UI is pretty. Solve my problems as a user. Most of my interactions with Netflix go like Spend 30 min looking through the millions of junk shows just to turn it off after watching nothing.

Not sure if you’re aware but there’s work at tech companies beyond the UI and features you see. Think about the massive video streaming scale Netflix has to handle.

Is it more scale than Google, Amazon, Meta?

In many cases, yes.

How frequently do you see Amazon-scale outages on their platform?

Engineering salaries are less 10% of the company’s spending, by the way.

Give some credits when is due! A lot of companies use AWS but very few of them push the AWS boundaries. Not only one service, but there were many services where we (ex-Amazon) had to do a redesign or come up with a new design just so that they can scale. You will just see a fraction of what they do on their GitHub, but they have more, their ecosystem on AWS is at a different level. I also met Adrian many times and he was unique.

You remind me of my Uber driver in Vegas. He was pretty pissed that this Uber company just made a phone app and takes 30% cut from his hardwork ! He was like look how simple that app is ! Yeh that’s the point Einstein!

Microsoft Aaron86 Jan 27, 2022

Your Uber driver was right. 30% cut is possible only because of monopoly/duopoly position of ride sharing apps. Significant money were invested into marketing, killing local taxies, getting airports access - and now ride share companies making poor drivers to pay for all this.

eBay pea green Jan 28, 2022

It wasn’t about the cut, it just shows how layman oblivious to complexity behind what appears a simple app, it’s expected from Uber driver not someone who is in the business. Honestly on the cut , everyone gets greedy not just corporations. This is the market which wasnt even open to common folks, NYC medallion used to go for 2M. Uber obliterated that entire cartel. And honestly Uber drivers very pretty psyched about this when this started they are just getting greedy now.
