Netflix - L4 TC - 310k (All Cash) Pros - Team has good wlb, everyone claimed to work only 35-40 hrs a week max. Manager is supportive and expects team and charter to be stable. Cons - Lack of hyper growth. Both level wise and TC wise Snap L4 TC - 375k ( 180k base/ 175k annual stock). Pros - Snap stock is at all time low so TC will be much more year 2 and 3 ( possibly 450k+). TikTok ban can make Snap a good product for the long run. Cons - Wlb - team works 50 hrs a week, potential PIP Quota, Unstable product and maybe dying company (another layoff ?) OpenAI - L4 (SDE -2 Equivalent) TC - 440k (base 240k, rest stock) Pros - Hyper growth company, can easily become the next Google, potential to become a VP within a decade, highest TC and stock has the potential to 3x if IPO. Cons - Team works 50-60 hrs a week, no Internal tooling Available, resource crunched, expected to operate like a workhorse right away, startup culture so no break or even slight slack because of startup culture.
If your goal is not rest and vest then openAI seems like a no brainer here. Snap os least attractive
Rest and Vest is not an option at either snap or openai.
Wow congrats on those offers! I voted for OpenAI as well
OpenAI. If you can’t handle it, quit after a while. I’m pretty sure you can hold onto that job for at least 1 year. It can’t be that bad.
Yoe?
How VP within a decade?
You know that OpenAI doesn't do stock and isn't going to IPO, right?
Genuinely curious, why aren’t they going IPO
It's their business model. https://openai.com/blog/openai-lp
You have to be braindead to not take openAI
Hmmm. The workload is also a lot. They actually operate like a full blown startup.
You want to work here bc the resume add will define the rest of your career even if you quit within 1.5 years
How were your interviews? Any details that you are willing to share? 🙏
Netflix and chill
Similar thoughts. Too much of grind can be mindfucking.
Outside perspective here / not in SWE but I would take Netflix. Life is too short and tbh I think we’re at the peak of the AI hype cycle Comp def matters, early retirement is great, but the happiest people I know are still working but for a team / company that prioritizes wlb

Open AI Always ride with the rising sun
You think I can become a VP at OpenAI in another 10 years ? I have seen that in most companies the early birds get rich. Openai has the potential to become the defacto AI LLM company for all companies and startups kinda like how AWS had the first mover's advantage. Headcount growth -> more levels -> more charters=== VP of engineering/Product
There will probably be a lot of lawsuits with the public data they use for training LLMs
