Talked to a bunch of people who applied to Netflix SWE internships - 4 of them with Big Tech on their resume didn’t get an interview, while 3 with virtually no past experience got one. Checked the job description page, and I saw this. Why would Netflix specifically want to hire interns with no experience?? Are other companies doing this too? Considering straight up dropping Meta from my resume and reapplying to places. Edit: This is Netflix’s only SWE internship this year(they don’t have a separate one for underrepresented candidates etc). So I’m really confused why their core internship would be for people with no experience. #internship #netflix #netflixhiring #swe
From hiring only senior engineers with 5+ years of experience to exclusively hiring interns with no experience, Netflix has now come a full circle.
It's because of a word that begins with a D. Big D.
"Diversity"
Easier to mould unused play dough
This must be some kind of pathway program for freshman or sophomore students. So they want to expose ppl with opportunities who otherwise would miss at other companies.
I feel like usually they have separate programs for stuff like that though(Meta University, Amazon Propel etc). This is Netflix’s only SWE internship this year.
‘24 graduation date. Makes sense. Also, most interns don’t have prior intern experience.
Equal opportunity for all. I love Netflix more for this..now I will consider working there
The top tier all cash pay wasn’t enough?
But will they consider you? (Unless you’re from specific groups)
It's for internships. If you have experience, you have to apply for full time. Not internship.
What if I’m not graduating this year though 😭
You may want to highlight that you are a student and not a professional. Most recruiters are dumb and really have no brains at all. They spend less than 30 seconds on a resume and will not look at the dates etc to see if you are a student or professional.
I’m a fan. Imagine a Waterloo kid hogging all internships.
too many new grads or people with actual jobs applying for what are meant to be internships, not an entry level FT position.
That’s definitely valid, but isn’t it a bit strange to exclude students who have past experience(through other internships)? There’s a lot of students with past internships after their first or second year recruiting for another internship.
Have you ever worked outside tech? This requirement is normal. It's just to protect against the "no experience" cycle: to get a job, you need internship, to get internship, you need experience, but where the f do I get experience??? This "no experience" cycle is extremely prevalent outside tech and helps privileged kids get ahead. Not to mention some kids get 3 internships since their FRESHMEN year at the same company, like at mine.
