Which area is better to raise a family? We are in mid 30s with a toddler. I’m an Indian SWE, so Bay Area is more attractive in terms of job opportunities and weather. But it is expensive AF to buy a single family home, so considering the tri state area. Most posts here compare NYC and SF, but city living isn’t usually conducive for raising a family. Besides it is difficult to find decent SFHs in cities. Hence we are mostly considering suburbs with decent public schools, like Santa Clara county in the Bay Area or Great Neck plaza or Syosset around NYC.
Why do you think city living isn’t conducive for raising a family?
Bad public schools, lack of SFHs, homelessness , congestion etc.
Why do you need a SFH to raise a family
Bay Area...private schools in New York have long waiting lists and cost more.
Suburbs outside of NYC have great school systems, and there is no need for private schooling. Especially Great Neck and Syosett which he mentioned.
NYC has the best schools in the state. The magnets are the best schools in the country. No need for private unless you want to
Both syosset and great neck have great public schools, some of the best in ny and the country. Also consider westchester too
One issue with living in NYC suburbs is that I would need to travel to the city for work as most FAANG offices are in Manhattan, unlike the Bay Area. And traveling via public transportation are a hassle. Company shuttles in the Bay Area make getting to the office a bit easier.
You’d have to drive to a station and catch the MTA/LIRR. It will take about an hour in total. The advantage is those houses are cheaper.
If you’re considering Long Island then yes NY
Neither, I never get way when people move to this country their only options are HCOL areas that aren’t great for raising families.
I live in the Bay Area, and it’s been wonderful to raise my three kids here. 🤷♂️
Because Bay Area has many Asians and it’s important to raise kids in an environment that they are not minority.
If you can work remotely, try NJ, CT or MA
Nope, remote work isn’t an option
Apple has office in NY? Where?
Kansas
What reasons just two of them, why not other cities? There are lot good cities in USA to raise family.
Extended family and family friends in these areas
I’m a Bay Area native. Love it here, but did give some serious thought to moving to New York a few years ago. However, snow and I aren’t friends, so I’m staying put. If you’re ok commuting by train, I recommend moving to Westchester county in New York. Personally I think Rye is picturesque. It’s expensive compared to most of the country, but on par with the Bay Area.
We don’t get as much snow as people think we get. Lol
Oh I’ve been there in the winter. I fell in a snow bank a few years ago and that enough for to me to say nope.
Austin
More homeless and poop in the streets in Austin than SF now. I was just there last month. 😂
Only considering the Bay Area and tri state area.
