I am new hire for Uber (SFO) and they are asking me my work from home address. I live in Kansas and now if Uber's return to office date got postponed, I am planning to stay in Kansas for a while and do WFH. So how does the the taxes work if my LCA is filed with Kansas address? 1. Do I need to pay just Kansas taxes or do I need to pay taxes for California too? #uber #tax #
I am working remotely for a California company, I only pay Kansas state tax for now
You pay Kansas tax until you move to CA. You do NOT pay both.
Anyone done remote overseas tax?
Kansas only. Don’t use any ca address or anything that ties u to cali.
They sent around some letter saying you should tell HR where you physically reside and work from. Not sure how they can actually check (outside of say- tracing your ip), so you do you. If it were an option for me, I’d totally do an LCOL city with the HCOL pay.
Doesn't the LCA specify you have to live within 50 miles of the office the LCA was created to support? I might be getting my immigration forms confused but this is the point of the LCA IIUC.
You pay both, but you get credit for your Kansas taxes on your CA return, so you are effectively paying the CA rate, just with more steps. This assumes Uber marks your job as "based in CA". If they don't and only your home address is counted everywhere , then it's only Kansas taxes. IANAL / IANACPA I am not a lawyer / I am not a CPA, check your company's payroll team and a competent CPA. Most will offer you 30-60 min consultation for <$100 to discuss this.
Thank you for clarifying what IANAL means.
Hmm…my quote was 5000$ from a tax lawyer
