I won't specify which two companies these are. But if you find out, please don't point it out. My background: I'm a L6 TL at a mid-big company, MLE doing rec sys. can't pass the yoe requirement for staff positions at top-tier companies. Also, popular high-paying startups like DB don’t have suitable positions for me. Both companies IPO’d two years ago in good market and are both small to medium sized. Both offers are staff level position, but Offer 2’s TC (slightly more than Meta level pay) is 50% higher than Offer 1’s TC (slightly less than Google level pay). Offer 1 Background: - Company: A US company, well-known 2C app, known by many for its good culture, wlb, benefits, no layoffs, and high standards. Its financial reports and DAU are strong, so the stock price has been sturdy for the past two years. - Position: Tech Lead for a brand-new team, working on LLM/recommendation model training + inference infrastructure, building from scratch, great growth opportunity both technically and career-wise. - **Pros**: Future-oriented work in LLM inference; good scope to become a team leader, helpful for promotion to senior manager. - **Cons**: Due to a surge in DAU during the pandemic, the stock price is very sturdy and hasn’t fallen much; pay is lower; more self-learning is required as there’s no one and no documentation to consult within the company. Offer 2 Background: - Company: An Asian company, brand name only recognized in East and Southeast Asia, one-sided reviews on Blind and Glassdoor, no career growth, outdated tech, bad culture. The stock price has fallen by over 60% in the past two years. - Position: Staff IC in recommendations, no direct reports or team. - **Pros**: Much higher pay; very strong colleagues, many learning opportunities; the stock price has fallen sharply, might rise more in a couple of years when the interest is lower. - **Cons**: No career growth, difficult to get promoted internally; too much IC experience at this level might not be beneficial for getting the next job. I'm quite confused about how to choose, as the two offers are in completely different directions. #tech #offer #comparison
Average pay with greater culture definitely. You want to wake up and work everyday.
Peace of mind is more important. Hope that answers your question.
You can't put a price on happiness. Easy answer.
Would you rather work for a company with average pay but great culture or work to pay for therapy?
You will hate your life if you end up with a bunch of narcissitic nut jobs that with asses wider than a 2 dump trucks because they never leave their computer desk. Find a job that pays well and let's you like a healthy life. A wise Vulcan once said: Live long and prosper. He didn't say: Nerd out aat work 80 hours a week nd die a 38 year old virgin, from cardiac arrest from eating cheese burgers 7 days a week.
Culture is way more important
