The end of Backdoor Roth?!
Looking to see if this is common. I am more than half way done with my internship, but I never once recieved feedback (positive or negative) even though i have been asking for it since week 1. Is this common? Any suggestions?
I would explain that you aren't interested in HR's perspective of your work, you want to know your manager's personal opinion of your progress. I had a similar problem in my internship, and being very direct about the type of feedback you are looking for is helpful
Have you tried asking your mentor? How are you doing with the milestones of your project?
@OP your managers feed back isn’t important. What decides a return offer is what the bar raiser who looks at your work thinks. Focus on your projects and CRs and get them reviewed. Your manager may have no idea how your project will be reviewed
I have seen cases where manager doc is not sent to bar raiser as manager was not inclined
Managers feedback accounts for 60% of the decision.
Ask them straight for feedback. Your manager should give you feedback regularly. You should be having bi weekly 1on1s or even weekly is good as you are intern
Ask your manager for feedback
Not normal, manager/mentor should give direct actionable feedback.
You should be having: 1. Weekly 1:1 with your intern mentor 2. Biweekly 1:1 with your manager 3. A midpoint review in the middle of your internship 4. A final review your last week discussing your (or lack of) offer
Managers have to be very active with the interns. The intern reviews I have been at, where I felt the interns hardly made a dent to their assigned area is because manager was totally hands off and didn’t do squat. Really shameful as they also affect the future of these folks, at least their true chances of landing a FT conversion at amazon.
your manager gets notifications from internships team. you also must have internship advisor. bring it up. NOW. with no regular feedback you are heading straight to no offer. it is extremely frustrating not to get an offer just because your manager doesn’t support you. see what internships team can do to help. I have had several interns and there are periodic check ins from internships team, including periodic questionnaires. your manager fills in something there and probably some BS. talk to your internships person. today.
I’m worried my manager may hold it against me since this sounds like I am complaining to someone in HR
it’s the least of your worries now.
Straight up ask your manager in your 1:1 “am I on track to receive a return offer.” If you aren’t having 1:1s every week then talk to your recruiter
I’ve done that but he/she has always managed to avoid answering it, sending me links to HR docs that I can read. Is this an indicator of bad performance? If so, why don’t they just say it?
It's an indicator of a new or bad manager. How long have they been a manager?
