I have applied for Data Scientist related roles (through blind referral) in below companies 2 months ago, with 4-5 years of DS experience and an MS degree. I got no interview calls unfortunately (except shopify). I understand there are multiple factors involved. But do you think the ranking of graduate school and reputation/popularity of the previous company are important factors recruiters look at during job applications? YOE: 4.5 years as DS Current TC: $145k Very appreciated! #amazon, #atlassian, #cisco, #dropbox, #intel, #lyft, #sap, #shopify #zillow
School is like almost a 0% factor. Previous company is a pretty small factor
For getting the job I agree. For getting the interview… idk MIT, FAANG, and moved buttons full time is getting more interviews than state school at random Fortune 500 who worked on their bleeding edge stuff.
I mean maybe for the first job it helps. Once you have decent experience it just doesn’t matter for tech roles. My degree is not CS, my school is a mediocre state school, and my first company was a small tech company Worked there for 5 years, got good experience, put the right key words in my resume, and I’ve gotten call backs from most top companies cold applying since then
Thank you pXPr58, very helpful! Can you elaborate on what you mean by numbers? YOE, quantitative impact of the project, Stack-overflow/kaggle ranking kinda stuff?
Gotcha!
I recently hired a DS and looked at 600 resumes - send me yours lemme see what’s going on with it
Can I DM you too? I have been applying to Data Analyst jobs, transitioning out of the public sector, with not too much luck. Thanks!
Kaiser, you’re a real one, thanks for this content on Blind
Been ghosted 5 times in last two months! The other side is super enthusiastic about discussing more and then nothing.
I am sorry to hear that, it gets frustrating. I understand that I may not be what you are looking for but just a heads up would be nice, if we have spoken about going farther in the process. Good luck!
Sailing in the same boat, got ghosted 4 times in the last month. I agree with pXPr58, they wanna discuss more about the position, and then these folks disappear into thin air.
DM for Meta
Meta is on a hiring freeze for DS
Meta recruiter reached out saying they will have headcounts for DS in a month. (I was in interview process when they ghosted me after phone screen 3-4 months back)
No idea why ppl are saying previous company doesn’t matter. It matters a lot Your resume looks like shit but you have faang on it, you’ll probably get an interview Try finding the hiring manager on LinkedIn and messaging them directly. At least you’ll know that they are looking at your resume vs not making it past the recruiter screen.
This. Imagine you have US Navy in your resume. I personally applied over 3700 jobs and I got less than 10 phone screens!
Dm for Lockheed, @us navy

School name doesn't matter at all in tech.
I don't think that is true. A degree from Stanford would help you get into Google
It matters a heck of a lot more for grad school than undergrad. Mostly for each year in school, that's how many its relevant for your career. Think undergrad is impressionable for about 4 years, masters is about 2 years. PhD is so specialized its all about what they value
The hiring is slow in general
