Rant / question. TD;DR, not joining 60+ new joiners / onboarding meeting. Bad? Will I get fired? So I recently joined a new company, everythings great but there are like gazillions onboarding / "new joiners" meetings and most of it are super unrelated to my job. Im an IC and these meetings ranged from like learning about product marketing, to learning about empathy (I actually liked this one). Tomorrow they have a whole 2 hours meeting for D&I, and so on. I understand it's important to absorb the culture and whatever, but I'd rather learn more about the codebase I'd have to work on soon. Or at least, let me learn about your engineering culture. I feel bad for not attending these company-wide "new joiners / onboarding" meetings and it's only my 2nd day lol. There are like 60+ people in these meetings so I don't think they'll know (or care), but I feel bad and kinda worry that my manager will come to me and asked me why tf was I not in the meeting. Ive only skipped one meeting until now, but I still feel bad. Lastly, these meetings are there everyday for a week (actually 9 days). My question is, is this (skipping.. im sorry, "useless" meetings) something to worry about? In the meantime Im learning the codebase and their engineering practices on my own. Yes I know I could attend them and do my work or whatever, but it's hard to concentrate when theyre asking you to do shit on Miro, you know the deal lol. This is my first real job (ive had plenty of internships) if this question doesnt give yet lool. Thanks. TC: dont even worry about it. #onboarding #google #meta #amazon #meetings #FAANG
Just ask your manager to tell you which ones are relevant to your role and which are ok to skip.
You'll have plenty of time in the future to learn the codebase. Nobody's expecting anything from you during you first few weeks, just go to the damn meetings. You'll meet lots of people in different roles while working, it's good to have some understanding of what their jobs are.
yea, its just super boring... everyones silent and seems like they dont wanna be there either lmaooo. its alright, im gonna survive this ;)
It is possible that the meetings are useful but you fail to see it. You have no real experience so I suggest to keep an open mind and try to learn from all sources.
yeah tbf they are, but some are just super dry like getting assigned to breakout rooms... and asking each other what are our common interests. And then tell everyone here are our common interests. I guess just socialising with everyone, thats mostly the point.
Op who knows, you might make a friend!
LOL...R U A CHILD?😂
I actually am
how old are u @OP?
skip all of them, i can guarantee nothing will happen, neither will anyone notice
bad advice....
You won't get fired, but you have no idea how your network may positively impact your role in this company in the future. Consider how perf evaluations may be done when you're a couple years in. But if you wanna keep your head in a narrow space, skip. If you ever want to excel beyond a mid level SWE - start that networking early, however painful it is now
Just take them it’s only 2 weeks
I wonder if everyone decides that's the meeting to skip, and they literally have zero people showing up!
Bberg - you sound like you're privileged
Well, these meeting are just presentation. Just. If the meetings are virtual, just start them, put yourself on mute and minimize the window. It's not like you are expected to contribute there.
thats the thing, actually we are supposed to take parts haha.
What exactly are you supposed to do in D&I meeting. Some time they ask you to fill out some forms and take parts in the stupid games ? Are they calling each person by name to do so ?
