I’m a Sr Product Analyst, using SQL, SAS and Tableau. 6 YEO. TC 100k in a Tier 2 city. I’m not sure if my skills are enough to rise to a Director/VP role in the next 7-8 years. I have career anxiety sometimes and I’m not sure what comes next, finding it hard to find mentors too. I’m not sure it I should stick with Data Analytics or move to Data Science or move towards Project Management; or try them all. I enjoy solving business problems and working on strategies but sometimes I’m not sure if I’ll be good enough to have a great career. I know I’ll keep trying and learning but sometimes I feel so demotivated and doubt my abilities that I question everything. . . What keeps you guys motivated? Do you guys think just SAS and SQL are enough to rise to a 200k TC, have a successful career and how long does it take?

[India]You are dumb to think Tech people earn more than Govt employees these days
You need confidence. Remove the part where you think “ I’m not sure I’ll be good enough”. I started my career financial services as a call center rep and worked my way into a senior developer position at a tier 1 firm with no mba, cs degree , or inside connections. It’s a long process, but you need your first intermediate step that will show valuable experience.
Thank you for your suggestion. I’ll definitely keep trying.
if you want to be a team manager doing strategy: you have to have MBA and at 3+ years experience from top consultancy (mckinsey bcg bain) - this is how usually people land to such positions
If you can prep SQL, product sense and statistics, you can apply to product data scientist positions at FAANG. These positions pay 200k-250k.
Woah, that’s something I had no idea about. Could I DM you for some more details?
Sure
I learnt product sense, AB testing, and statistics from a coach and I was able to get 200k. I was already good with sql. You can also do it.
Not sure what your education experience is but if you're trying to move to DS then most roles want minimum of a MS, pref a PhD. Doesnt mean you can do it without just that you're options will be limited. Also project management ibwould say generally doesn't pay better. If you like diving into complex problems with data I would stick within the data analytics realm. With 6 yeo I would thing you're ready for management fairly soon? Do you want to people manage within analytics or you trying to keep an IC role?
I want to manage team to work on strategy and business problems. Currently projects that I work on are similar to implementing a strategy with a team. I want to be able to create, test and drive such implementations from ground zero. I’m confident in terms of creating such initiatives and executing them; just not sure what skills are needed for a complete growth. In the 6 YEO, 3 are in India as a business analyst and 3 in US as a Data/Product Analyst. I do have a MS in Information Systems from UCinn.
