Which company would you join present day: Nuro, Zoox or Cruise? Despite all three companies operating within the AV space, it seems Nuro is much different than Zoox and Cruise, who have both been acquired by large companies and are focused on building a autonomous robotaxis. I also haven’t heard of any layoffs at Zoox and Cruise, and am curious to know if that’s because they’re more stable or if the layoffs are still on their way. #nuro #tech #cruise #cruiseautomation #zoox #waymo #autonomousvehicles #robotics #selfdriving #techindustry #automobile #software #engineer
I think Blind is already giving you an answer via the related companies showing on this post. Go Nuro or Waymo. Zoox business model and culture was already crap back in the day before getting acquired by Amazon, and now it's even worse.
What's bad about Zoox? Thinking of interviewing with them
Business model sucks - they are trying to tackle 3 industries at the same time, viz, autonomous driving (Waymo), car production (Tesla), and rideshare (Uber). They were near bankruptcy till Amazon bought them. No saying when Jassy decides he's done with unsustainable business models, like he's done with Alexa (which was a good decision tbh) Culture sucks too, and worse now that it's bought by Amazon.
Nuro laid off 20% in Nov. 2022. A week before Thanksgiving. Ain’t that crazy?
They were late, we did it two weeks before Thanksgiving.
Waymo just did layoffs last month and again today
Nuro! Zoox has a terrible culture and weak compensation backloaded 6 years. Cruise has high comp and that’s about it.
Had* reduced bonus. No raises. Delayed bonus.
What is zoox culture?
Lol
This is obviously biased but I chose Nuro in part because their problem is much simpler to solve vs robotaxis. Even if the tech lags waymo/cruise, it can afford to given it doesn't have to take optimal routes or worry about the safety of a passenger. Additionally, much less and lesser funded direct competition.
Nuro would go bankrupt in the next year.
It's definitely a make or break year for us. But I would say that's the same for a lot of companies in this space and in tech in general
I have been in cruise for 2 and a half year and now just completed another 2 years in zoox. Any day hands down I will choose zoox over and over again. Culture is awesome, people are amazing, leadership have realistic goals. Yes they could imprpve their compensation structure. But overall still a great place to work
A bit of a devil here. Wouldn’t that be the case if one went from Zoox to Cruise
Haha depends to what role. I can guarantee the attrition rate for mid level managers, EM, TPM and somewhat QA was horrible when I was there. Things might have changed For IC engineers it's definitely a heaven with all awesome toolset and cool problems to solve
Cruise is still better as compared to others in terms of comp! But it starts and ends there. Good luck on your decision
This is the answer OP. Cruise culture is broken, unless you're in it for a quick cash grab - don't join Cruise.
